Hi all,

I'm looking to get my driver's license in the coming weeks/months. I am 25 years old and I've never had either a permit or license before.

I have done plenty of researching through the DMV's site, but the language surrounding the age and requirements for how to get a permit and/or license is a bit confusing. What I understand, even with my age, is that I would still need to get a permit before my license, but I have seen answers floating around here and elsewhere on the internet that I would be able to take a test that same week to actually get my license, as opposed to waiting the full year. Is that right?

I know this was answered two years ago (https://www.reddit.com/r/vermont/comments/nns9yv/getting_ones_drivers_permitlicense_as_an_adult/), but I was not sure if regulations had changed on this since then.

I'm intending to reach out to the DMV and confirm this, but any guidance here would be greatly appreciated, especially just to quell my worries. Thank you!

Yes! So you do need the learners permit but there’s no time in between that you have to wait to take the road test. What I do know is that you need your physical copy of the permit (the temp paper is not allowed) to take the road test. However, from what I know they bo longer print same day in the DMV, and I believe what you’ll be waiting for is for it to come in the mail.

Got it, thank you so much for this! That makes sense. So, just to make sure I have the order right on how this would go:

Taking the knowledge/written test (and passing it) would grant me my permit -> receive physical copy of the permit at some point in the mail -> after receiving physical permit, I can take the road test at any point, with no need to wait for anything else -> pass, receive license?

The only additional thing I'd mention here if the end goal is ASAP license to be sure to schedule the road test as soon as your permit is approved. It can be 3-4 weeks out to get a road test scheduled depending on which DMV you use. If I were scheduling for South Burlington right now the soonest is April 18th. It varies a bit and while awhile it was a LONG wait...seems a little less awful right now.

I had to do this back in 2007 when I immigrated to the us. After passing the test you get a temporary license printed on paper and then a few weeks later the real.deal arrives.

The paper one is valid and cops will accept it, but you'll need other id (ie passport)

You first need to obtain a permit. Obtaining a permit is a knowledge based test. You then need to take your licensing test which consists of a vision test, a knowledge test, and a road test. You must supply an appropriate vehicle for the road test (registered, inspected, & insured). Details on licensing and information related to the testing requirements is available in the drivers manual https://dmv.vermont.gov/sites/dmv/files/documents/VN-007-Drivers_Manual.pdf

This is crazy! In the late 80s early 90s I had let my junior license from another state expire and it had been several years. I went to the DMV, took the written test, took the driving test and walked out with a photo license. I think any adult who can pass both tests should be able to schedule the tests both for the same day and walk out legal to drive.

When did this change and more importantly why did this change?
