My husband and I love going out to the movies, and I'm wondering if the members of this subreddit have any personal favorite theaters they'd be kind enough to recommend!

Edit: Wow! Thank you all so much for the suggestions, I can't wait to check these out.

Essex Cinemas is a stand-out movie theater with friendly employees, good screens and comfortable seats, and a rewards program; back when I still lived in the Burlington area, I would go to a movie there about once a week

Sunset Drive-In, Colchester 💕

Drive-ins are the only answer. Movie theaters have always been a god awful experience.

Sorry to hear that! I like both but the sunset has a lot of good memories for me :)

Sunset drive is not a movie theater. You are misunderstanding what I said. I love drive-ins

What part of what I said came across as a misunderstanding to you?

Savoy in Montpelier is fantastic.

They are small, but they definitely have a passion. Lots of special events (I miss Trash Tuesdays), and they often have movies that no other theater has.

I miss Trash Tuesdays SO MUCH. Exactly the kind of thing I want to see there.

I adore the Savoy, but they definitely go through periods where the programming is a little vanilla for what I want from an indie theater like that.

Wish they did more with underground, artsier fare. Still my favorite theater by far, though. Happy to be a member.

I was so bummed that I only learned about Trash Tuesdays relatively near the end of it, I only got to go to a handful.

I believe the only reason they stopped doing it was that the host moved away, so I bet if someone reached out to the Savoy willing to host, they might be up to do it again.

Yeah I forget their name, but they were great!

Just wish they'd play more things like Midsommar, Titane, Men, etc. In a bit of a lull for me right now.

Given that, any time their programming has been in a real groove I've reached out just to say I was excited about it, and they've always been super responsive and receptive to feedback.

It's a hard balance to strike with artier/cultier fare and the more subdued stuff. I get a lot of Montpelier demographics may not be thrilled about, say, Infinity Pool, but that was one I was shocked they didn't pick up, that I recall.

Middlebury Marquis. They have real butter on their popcorn and the best hidden burrito stand I have seen in Vermont.

It's been years since I've been, but it was super cheap for tickets and food. Lots of great memories there

I would watch a movie at sunset in the winter too.

The Savoy is a lovely intimate theater and you can rent out their basement screen to show whatever you like, too! Great party space.

Big Picture in Waitsfield. Couch seats, and a good restaurant attached. I'm pretty sure you can bring your dinner into the theater and there is some seating with tables.

Check out their Tuesday prices: $5! They’re running animated, live action, and documentary shorts nominated for Oscars. Saw the animated shorts last week; gonna check out the live action shorts next week.

My wife calls our Tuesday excursions “Tightwad Tuesday.”
