It’s definitely not perfect, but I’ve rewatched this show a few times and I love it. A lot of the political and societal commentary is even more prevalent than it was when the show was made.

GFC?
Global financial crisis, the largest financial crisis since the Great Depression.
They actually cover it in the newsroom with the repeal of glass-steagall in the USA, there was a perfect storm that lead to a massive housing bubble bursting in the United States.
It was a pretty rough time for most countries with massive layoffs massive evictions and the worst stock market crash since 1929.
Gotcha. I know what the global financial crisis is (and I’ve watched all of the newsroom), but there’s too many random acronyms being thrown around on Reddit to keep track of everything.
I’ve written papers on this and done a ton of research and have never seen the acronym GFC so don’t worry, you’re not alone lol
Maybe it’s a regional thing. Here in Australia it is usually referred to as the GFC. Even official government reports and news headlines here call it “The GFC”
Although Aussies also talk a lot about the gfc because we were one of the few nations to avoid recession during the 07-09 period.
I thought it was so cringe and self righteous. Couldn’t get into it.
I loved where he compared the Tea Party to the Taliban. Especially where he called himself a RINO. Also you can’t forget the Sorority Girl opening about America.
The interview with the climatologist is amazing tv lol
Toby really killed the mood
10 years old and aged like milk lol. Where boiling seas and perpetual darkness?
Not that part, just the scene. The reactions and the acting
It is peak Toby energy, I'll give it that.
Favorite part is probably when Daniels asks "what do your superiors think of you saying this" and he's just like "...who cares?"
Although for me the joy in the show is anything involving Thomas Sadowski and Olivia Munn, or Jeff Daniels and Sam Waterston. Some absolutely killer and hilarious dialogue.
No, it isn’t. It’s highly rated.
It was weird when it was out. The stories were based on current events that happened a year or so earlier so it felt like Sorkin was kinda making a show about how he wish the current events went.
I imagine it’s better the further out since you aren’t aware of the time difference and it’s not really about current events but how the news reports it.
My mind has stopped working….excuse my ignorance, what is GFC?
Global financial crisis
I think it's properly rated? It's still a good show but when compared to Sorkin rolodex, it's not one of his best.
To me, I just didn't like he used real events. I liked the parallel universe setting of West wing. Newsroom felt like he was using the benefit hindsight to criticize how things should have gone. Which falls hollow because no shit, you see how things unfold so you can tell a better story

It's a terrible, terrible show.
I liked that it went back in time from when it aired so they could cover events that really happened. The OBL episode especially, and the scene where the producer backspaces the death year on the graphic for Gabby Giffords was a powerful moment.
Garbage for neoliberals who still believe we live in a democracy and that any real journalism is going on.
It's... rather critical of the journalism industry though.
I liked it at the time but in the intervening decade it has become impossible to take journo worship seriously.
Real journalism should be worshipped at this post because it doesn’t exist anymore
Meh. It is Sorkin at his worse and I love Sorkin products.

I thought the post was about The Newsroom & not Newsradio.
You are correct, that commenter is confused.
As much as I loved NEWSRADIO
(thanks for the nostalgia trip, btw)
....yeah, wrong show lol

I think it is overshadowed by the West Wing.
I remember when it came out a lot of people basically viewed it as “Sorkin getting another microphone” and I still view it much the same way.
It’s a good show, but while the newsroom was written in a 2012 post GFC world and so it had room for hindsight commentary, the west wing began its first season in 1999 and ended in 2008. It was quite literally commentary on 9/11 the war on terror, and the makings of the GFC. It gives the west wing a more visceral and in the moment feel.
At least that’s my thoughts anyway.
