May it never be used for football ever again. This field is terrible and it's a miracle that no one's been injured or the game has changed direction based on someone falling down.

This was one of the worst fields I have ever had the displeasure of viewing people play on. The number of times people fell over because they couldn’t get their footing is ridiculous. Whatever research was done wasn’t thorough enough, and whoever led the research team and approved the funding should be forced to run across that field while it’s wet with flat footed shoes. I hope it’s never used again

Roger Goodell came into a test stadium, ran around for 13 seconds with a scotch in one hand and a cigar in the other, said "fuck it Junior, cut the check" to nobody and walked out of the stadium while he called his limo driver to tell him to bring him to Taco Bell

No the NFL got paid to use it. Simple. That’s why that changed it

It really was abysmal, not making excuses. The thing that gets me is yeah it may have seemed like a good idea but at some point they had to KNOW and they didn’t do anything about it. A backup plan really isn’t that complicated.

USGA literally referred to it as “Grass” and “turf”. You know, the company that made it?

To be clear, all grass is turf, but not all turf is grass.

Not sure why they used it on the biggest stage. Imagine the next big space launch they are sending a 100 people to the moon to try and create a liveable environment up there and all of the sudden they try an experimental fuel that they have been "researching" for 2 years and the whole thing just blows up as a result.

Isenrath t1_j8f50el wrote

Oh you don't have to try to sell me on why people submit stupid research haha. I remember some of the stupid shit I heard about that got submitted for Grants when I was in grad school and it's like some people don't have critical thinking ability. Some people are just incredibly book smart but an absolute moron when it comes to real world stuff.

Probably good for golf, not so much for NFL.

gbfk t1_j8dw8e6 wrote

The Tahoma 31 the article is about is the same grass used at Lincoln Financial Field. Also for the Arkansas Razorbacks which had no complaints for its turf. So it's a perfectly good grass for football.

But the issue seems seems to come from a couple major changes that made it not quite Tahoma 31, at least not the same turf stand that has been successfully used in other stadiums. It was heavily overseeded with ryegrass for the aesthetic (dark green, good to paint), which means a lot of the grass isn't anchored as well as a conventionally grown stand without overseed.

But also that it was only installed two weeks ago. So heavily overseeded turf trying to re-establish roots while all the rehearsals and painting is going on. Overseeded grass rooted into a base turf that barely has time to re-establish it's own roots. End result is what they got last night.

Pece17 t1_j8efth7 wrote

No wonder the grass was awful and everyone was slipping. You can’t play football on fuckin fairway grass, grass that is meant to be loose enough to take divots from.

1

one_salty_cookie t1_j8v0rbk wrote

I put some normal midiron Bermuda in my backyard in Peoria last May. It is dormant now, in mid-winter. I did not overseed this year, to avoid the rye competing with the Bermuda roots over the winter.

I think that’s what these turf “experts” need to do. Let the Bermuda base grow strong for a year or so. Then overseed in the next fall for a beautiful green field with a tough base. Probably be much better than what they had on Sunday night.

People complaining of slipping. Doesn’t this happen every single time a big game is played on natural grass?

Every single big game, they initial “fresh” grass to have a perfect looking field. However, that turf is far too young to be strong. You end up with divots, wipeouts, and a bunch of BS.

To me, it seems like they need to stop trucking in new turf weeks before a major event.

fimbres16 t1_j8bwdwr wrote

Players complain about turf all season. Welp isn’t this a consequence of their crying? Yeah you slip on grass much easier than artificial turf. You also don’t hard plant and tear your ACL. It’s a trade off.
