When I hear about this kind of stuff, it tends to be from some sort of reaction. Typically a chemical breakdown or corrosion/oxidation. Although it might be neat if it were a physical phenomenon like the piezo effect.
As it is, it is a neat way to get power that sounds unreliable as it dries out.

So what I hear them saying is that in the foreseeable future I won't have to plug my Christmas tree into a wall outlet. Just jam a power adapter into the trunk and I'm good to go.
