Looks like the opening date was a moved a few times and it's no longer mentioned on their website.

Idk if it's taxes, but my guess would be funding has run out or slowed. They've tried to host one or two "block parties" that were pretty unimpressive. I don't think the locals on the hill care about trapezium that much.

I don't think it's funding. Waukeshaw Development, the umbrella org that is owned by the same owners (Dave McCormack & co) as Beales, Trapezium, Demolition Coffee, and a bunch of other successful entities, have deep pockets. They are doing several development projects throughout Virginia, so maybe they're spread thin on a project management or manpower level.
I just emailed them at the address on that page. We'll see if they bother to get back to me with an informative answer.

In before “we are looking forward to opening up our exciting new brewery location to a Richmonders as soon as possible in 2023”.
But I actually appreciate you emailing as I would definitely want to know more

Yeah, that's the sort of generic non-answer I'm expecting, and kind of the answer they've given in the past when I've inquired. Maybe they'll surprise us this time!

I feel like every local on the hill is looking forward to it... I can't wait for it to open.

Enjoy, I guess? I'm sure I'll partake once it's here but I'm no big fan of theirs to begin with and they seem to be taking their sweet time with it.

Wait... Ramen spot?
For anyone else reading this, their description of the block party isn't hyperbole. That's exactly what it was. Maybe less tables.

I somehow deleted my comment - productive Tuesday.
My description of the event: “they definitely shit the bed with the “block party” that was just one tent selling beer, one food truck, and four school cafeteria tables”
But yeah there’s a new ramen spot I think called Slurp that is I believe going into the building spotty dog is in. Someone (think the owner?) was saying on Facebook they are aiming for a March opening
There’s also a new cocktail bar from Jasper owners called Emerald Lounge going into that area some point this year.

when that old lawyer's office was finally demolished, my family and I were fantasizing about what would go there instead, and my dream scenario was 1. an ice cream place and 2. a ramen place.
I feel so blessed.

I was just telling my partner if I could open a restaurant on the hill it would be ramen... Great minds think alike or something. I know where I'll be going on rainy days.

WHEN IS YOUR CHURCH HILL LOCATION OPENING? Soon, we promise! We are working now to get everything prepared for a late spring/early summer 2023 opening.
Listed under their FAQ’s for what that’s worth. Date has changed so many times it’s hard to take anything seriously.

I thought I heard they found old bones/human remains in the cellar and that’s the hold up at this point. Can anyone else confirm that?

IDK if that's true or not, but if it's a rumour, this may be where it started (the Odd Fellows aren't Masons, but it's a similar sort of organization with unusual rites):

Someone asked on a social media post a couple weeks ago and they responded with, "We are working through some code challenges with the city, hoping it will be a few months."
Their head brewer, who was there since the beginning of Trapezium, Beale's and Camp Trapezium, also left last summer so not sure who is doing their brewing now but that probably delayed some things too. I would expect them to probably start out by just sending product up from Petersburg to have on tap and package.

Pretty sure that's the plan, because the site is too small for a full brewery (no room for mega tanks) But for a brewery to be a brewery, I think it's like 20% of product sold has to be manufactured there, so I think the plan is to do some barrel aged varieties, stored, aged and sold onsite .
CheersVA t1_j6ocjw6 wrote
That's right. Pilot / Satellite taprooms have to brew at least 20% of what they serve on site as I understand it. The rest can come from their other taprooms. I recall seeing a post a while back of them moving for foeders into the space so I expect that will be their 20%. That's pretty much how they operate Camp Trapezium in Amherst County. They do some barrel aging there but majority of the stuff they sell comes from Petersburg.

Yeah, it's weird. This was the most recent article I could find (from April 2022), and it sounded like they were poised to get things going, with most construction complete, and just the final design phase to be completed, then boom, silence for almost a year.
Every time I've asked any employee about when the Church Hill facility will open, they're just like 'in a few months'. 🤷♂️
Edit:. I dug around on the permit portal to see if that would shed any light on what's going on, but other than their building permit expiring in March 2023, there's not much relevant public info.

I bet they got their property taxes and thought "holy shit, we should stay in Petersburg."
