I believe there are exemptions for political speech by churches if they don't endorse a specific candidate and are related to their faith, ex. Catholic churches being pro-life based on how they interpret the Bible.

Went to a "pumpkin walk" thing for kids that was at a church the other day, it's just a short trail in the woods showing off a bunch of jack-o'-lanterns the people had carved, and one of the first ones was a pumpkin with 'vote no on prop 3' carved into it. Fucking trashy.
