Detroit is a ton wealthier than Athens. A better US comparison are small cities like Jacksonville Florida or Grand Rapids Michigan. Although GDP per capita in the US are also much higher.

What did you expect? buildings on clouds in the sky..?
This is what you call urbanization and it’s everywhere…

Dense, historical, and not very wealthy cities in Europe look like this. IMHO it’s not awful, it’s just not what very very rich cities in the west look like.
The reality is that Detroit’s GDP is roughly $200 Billion per year, which is also roughly the GDP of all of Greece (and like 10x Athens).
Americans often have a pretty skewed impression of how wealthy (or not) other countries are based on non-economic metrics like high crime in inner cities.

I imagine there are parts that are more preserved from a historical standpoint?

My GF and I stayed in the city with a view of the Parthenon. On the rooftop at night we would look out and see this amazing historical structure, raised on a hill and perfectly illuminated. We felt that, despite it being thousands of years old, it still gave off the same aura as ancient and early modern Greece in its prime. Then we looked around us at a city in shambles. Barred windows and doors. Graffiti and trash everywhere. People openly shooting heroin at night and in broad daylight. It was quite the contrast and we just felt sad. The city that fathered free thought and democracy deserves better

most of the awfulness of this photo is the color gradient. Take the same shot on a sunny day and it no longer looks dystopian.

Yeah I was in Athens last summer and some of the views from the hills were pretty cool. There are some beautiful neighborhoods, lots of amazing restaurants, and yeah, definitely a bunch of graffiti and old buildings. Idk to me it just seemed like a city with some real character.
