Curious as to why this hasn’t been reported on? Even more boggled at the comments in that Twitter thread saying this “is a good thing” because of “gentrification”. Last time I saw row homes firebombed in this city, it didn’t turn out too well.

This is absolutely nuts. I seriously can't believe TU students still choose to live around campus. Not to be a dick but after everything that has happened in the last 1-2 years, you have to be pretty dumb to live off campus at Temple.

apparently the dude in the video jumped out of an empty boarded up house. These students are literally living right next door to a boarded up house. Give me a fucking break

Genuinely not sure where you want us to live? All of philly is dangerous on a students budget.

TU is right on the BSL. You can find plenty of places in south philly that are comparable in price without having to duck gun shots or worry about your house gettingrobbed every spring/holiday break

Only place I've had a gun waved at me is South Philly, on Synder ave. All of the cheap areas of Philly are dangerous. But here it only takes me 10 minutes to walk to anything I need.

I’m not sure why anyone would go to temple these days tbh

They gave me money and being in a city is important for employment opportunities. Not everyone wants to tuck into a suburb or college town. Students shouldn't be blamed for attending a college the locals make a war zone

Not blaming the students at all, y’all shouldn’t have to worry about being murdered while getting an education, it’s the cities fault. There’s gotta be other cities that have colleges though

I lived next to boarded up houses, on corners that were basically open drug markets, more or less surrounded by homeless and addicts (both regulars and transients) about 5 or so years ago at Temple. It was never “safe safe” but I was never truly afraid and never had anything happen like what I’ve been hearing recently.

I had two friends get robbed in five years? There were a couple break ins where TVs or Xboxes were stolen? Again not great but it sounds so much worse now than it used to be. It happened so fast.

Hard to imagine recommending it to anyone these days, I don’t know if I would do it myself. These stories are getting ridiculous.

Its because of the pandemic. They basically stopped giving a fuck and assumed everyone just moved home, cut their police presence way down, and the rest is history. Now they are trying to blame it on the students "disrespecting the community", as if were the ones that have single-handedly turned it into a shit hole. Its actually disgusting to see my alma mater act that way.

Survivorship bias. You got lucky you ddn't get robbed. I talked to an old head who lived in that area for awhile and he was saying temple kids have always been an easy lick for as long as he can remember. It seems to be happening more frequently and the crimes are more violent now but as far as off campus TU kids getting robbed...yea...thats been happening

I know the numbers the university publishes are likely unreported, but I have a hard time believing things are that much more bleak than when I started at Temple in 2010. People are acting like the area surrounding the university had some halcyon days where students could walk around without care, which was never my impression. Also, my old heads near my apartment at 17th and Jefferson always told me that Temple students were only targeted by the stupidest or most desperate criminals, as those were the targets that would create the most attention.

What’s the full story?

I mean obviously no one should be firebombed but what is the deal, this didn’t happen without a catalyst.
