Usually if you start in the middle of the pay period, you’ll get paid at the next pay day. You will be paid for the entire time, including the previous period. I’ve done it several times. Some places use outdated payroll systems and you may have to wait until the NEXT payday but that’s rare. It happened to me once and I just asked them to cut me a check for the first few weeks.

I don't think you actually started in the middle of a pay period. Mainly because if you knew the pay periods, you'd know how many weeks you'd be paid this Friday.

The Nov 18th paycheck was probably 10/31 through 11/11, in which case you started at the beginning of the pay period and will be paid for 2 weeks this Friday.

Ask HR for a copy of the payroll calendar. They should have one that shows payroll period, deadline for submitting time and/or leave, and pay date.

This can vary by workplace but I would definitely make sure to check in with HR or whoever does payroll. You should never be shy about asking about first paychecks and pay schedules. Sometimes there are errors with onboarding folks to payroll and it's best to catch those as early as possible so you get paid.

In addition, depending where you are based there are some states where it is legally mandated to pay workers within a particular time frame (i.e. every two weeks at minimum). Employers can get in trouble and owe fees on that unpaid salary in those locations.

It depends on how your companies payroll dates aligns with their pay periods. This first paycheck is likely going to be either one or two weeks worth of pay.

You should get 1 week pay on Friday, since you only worked 1 week during that pay period. The 2nd and 3rd weeks should be on the next check, and it’ll normalize after that.

The HR dept didn’t ask if you needed money and cut you a paper check for first week?

It depends on when they pay out on their pay periods, and if you are absolutely sure you started mid-pay period.

My wife had a pay period Nov 14 to Nov 27 that will be paid on Dec 2nd.

You get paid next pay period. I started work a day after the pay cycle so I had to wait a month (we get paid monthly).
