I don't think they necessarily need to be glass.

And I think you are overstating the likelihood of vandalism. People could also go around slashing every tire they see, and that doesn't happen, either.

That’s cause those tires belong to individuals, so if the owner of that car catches you slashing your tires you are probably gonna get your ass whooped. When it comes to public or semi-public property there’s no risk like that, hence why every single LinkNYC screen is shattered in certain neighborhoods

Then don't use glass. Use something like reflective silver paper like those used on toys and stick them around the handle

Motorcycles have mirrors and it's not an issue. So long as the handlebars sick out farther they'll be fine.

Your helmet can have mirrors. Oh wait, none of you wear helmets.

You could just.. ya know.. turn your head like most bicyclists?

Which I do. But in high traffic areas, taking your eyes off the road in front of you is also dangerous. And it's not just for cars, oblivious pedestrians walk right out in front of you all the time. If I'm on a street with no bike lane, I need to look behind me before changing lanes. That extra time with no forward visibility increases my risk to myself and others.

Every moving object in the city should have mirrors. If you share a path with other moving objects approaching from behind.

I remember trying the citi bikes during the tri boro bike tour before they were launched to public. I found them to be very hard to navigate and cumbersome. I feel as they went for the cheapest option and here we are.

Its kinda saying like Citibikes should have Helmets attached.....

I agree! They are already so big and heavy. E-bikes should look like lightweight mopeds. Full suspension, bright lights, turn signals, and mirrors are all important safety features.

No. Just... no. Styaying safe while navigating through a complex, living, breathing, dynamic environment where one wrong move could kill you requires a VERY high level of awareness of your surroundings. Part of that includes depth perception. So putting a mirror in your peripheral vision that you look to before, say changing lanes, is incredibly dangerous. You know the saying, objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear? If you're not using your eyes, your ears, or other means of gauging how fast a car is travelling based on engine sounds, depth perception, a good sense of your own speed -- essentially relying instead on a mirror that simply cannot give you a good idea of how to time your movements through traffic -- not to mention adds visual noise to your periphal vision.

I could go on about it but... just... no. Don't put mirrors on Citibikes. It's just asking for trouble, especially from inexperienced cyclists or people who typically change lanes without visually checking the blindspot EVERY time they change lanes.

Only certain individuals should be a lowed to use a citibike.

Not everyone who uses a Citi Bike knows exactly when to turn, where to go, how to get there. They just freely ride like they own the street.

Bikes in general should be regulated similar to how cars and scooters are, including requiring mirrors. Require registration, and inspections for eBikes since clearly they’ve become a hazard to an extent. The manufacturers should be regulated to make sure they’re using approved safe batteries.

Next we can regulate running shoes too almost got hit by one of them runners today when I was browsing Reddit and walking down the street. Make it so they can only wear boots unless they pass their running test or something.

Something as simple as showing a safety video and take a short quiz (no more than 10 simple questions) when registering for citibike or buying a bike would do wonders to awareness.
