Yeah, even the most reprehensible criminals have rights. And when a judge finds the word of a dog thief more credible than that of two cops, it's time to fire those cops.

Maybe cops shouldn't be slapping people in hospitals.

Idk, let's sit down and have a discussion about this where we hear out the equally valid points on both sides.

The pro cops-should-be-able-to-hurt-people-without-consequences argument has historically been “I love it when gangs beat up, harass, and or kill the people I don’t like” - so it’s not really worth considering or respecting.

Yeah...I was joking

Ahh, okay. Might want to add the /s next time, it's kindof hard to read inflection, and there are a lot of really stupid people who would say that completely un-ironically.

I know it's a joke, but what if a puppy reads this? You could ruin their whole day.

Way to make sure the law is upheld, you ignorant degenerates.

Puppy owners need to file a civil suit then. Denying them justice bc of stupid cops is wrong.

Adventurous_Aerie_79 t1_j9vtw0l wrote

justice was denied because the person whose entire job was to collect evidence didnt do his effing job. No data, no charges. Cop had one job-- be mad at him.

Even in the US, for what? They got the dog back so no damages there. Maybe if the bullet went thru the thief and into their wall or something, a claim for that may be possible I suppose.

Idk how it actually works in Canada, but I like the concept of tying criminal and civil liability connected to those criminal acts together. Would definitely give incentive for Joe Schmo US citizen to demand politicians to fix the issues with the US police departments.

I would think a good lawyer could come up with something like emotional distress or something, but the question is does the thief even have anything to take?

MJTony t1_j9up7dw wrote

That’s not how it works in Canada

blueskies1800 t1_j9wpa24 wrote

I have a very low opinion of a dog thief, but a policeman is supposed to be professionally trained to control his emotions no matter what the perpetrator did. So both are reprehensible in my mind.

Why did the cop feel like he had the right to slap him?

Maybe like hold them BOTH accountable? We can’t do that?

andygchicago t1_j9xsf7e wrote

Headline is misleading. This isn’t a scenario where they let the thief skate because of some “cruel and unusual” stipulation. The cop didn’t follow legal protocol for a number of other reasons, so the ag didn’t have enough credible evidence to move forward

RagingHeretic t1_j9x3y9z wrote

Cops need to get their shit together.

Decisions like this are infuriating. Two wrong do not make a right. Both should have charges for their crimes and have to deal with the consequences. The guy was using a loaded gun in a robbery. ffs

OniExpress t1_j9un0wf wrote

You're missing the point that another officer declined to investigate the issue, setting up precedent that the whole department is unreliable. IE, the court can't take their testimony/evidence at face value anymore.

Korith_Eaglecry t1_j9twuns wrote

The idea that you shouldn't face consequences for your actions because someone else did something wrong to you is a bizarre way of handling crime.

ux3l t1_j9u3p85 wrote

Holding someone down who's injured, sedated and handcuffed to a hospital bed and repeatedly slapping him is more than a minor mistake, as "he did something wrong" implies

32

Korith_Eaglecry t1_j9u3y4s wrote

Never said it was a minor mistake. Making shit up to set up your argument isn't really a great way to start a discussion.

hairyhobbo t1_j9u4ywe wrote

You definitely misrepresented the situation by using mild language when the actual offense was pretty bad, and I think it was intentional.

GameSpection t1_j9ux18u wrote

The purpose of vetoing punishment due to authority mishandling isn't to blame the legal system, but to blame the cops. The criminal faces repercussions from committing a crime, but a cop should also face repercussions from abusing their power. If the way a cop executes their duty is irrelevant to a case, it would never be brought up and nobody would care as much about it.

The dude got shot and was hospitalized. Putting them in jail would be redundant

The suspect woke up and asked to speak to a lawyer, to which the police officer told him to suck a dick and eventually started beating the man. Another officer declined to investigate the incident.

It isn't a "someone else" scenario, it's the police force demonstrating that they can't be trusted. This isn't a rare issue, we do it all the time. Dirty cops get found out and then years of cases may need to be reopened, because now evidence is no longer viable.

robotman2009 t1_j9u5tws wrote

I mean, In some ways he did face consequences. The police were judge, jury, and executioner in this case. He was sentenced to a slap and served his sentence. Pity the officer robbed everyone of real justice.
