Emergency services were called out the evening before due to reports of a smell of gas? This sounds like it could've been prevented. With 12 ppl still missing & the 3 storey apartment block "pancaked", I'm not holding out much hope for them.

Someone is going to be held responsible for this I imagine. How terrible for those 12 ppl. To think they reported smelling gas & for whatever reason it wasn't sorted out. I guess more info will come out in time.

Jersey is not part of the UK. It’s a Crown Dependancy.

In a sense, but they’re different from British Overseas Territories.

They have they’re own government and separate laws from the mainland UK but the Duke/King Charles is the head of state.

Sigh. I was being funny and downvoted...
I saw the BBC article and posted, and THEN read the article. Bailiwick Jersey is an Isle off of France that is not part of the UK but under a Crown Dependency.
It is the largest and southernmost of the Channel islands.
I am also apologizing as apparently, lives were lost.

At least one person has died after an explosion in a block of flats in St Helier, Jersey police have said.
About 12 people are believed to be missing, with two “walking wounded” being treated at the hospital.
Emergency services arrived at the scene at Haut du Mont, Pier Road, in the capital in the early hours of Saturday.
Robin Smith, the chief officer of the States of Jersey police, said firefighters had been called to the area the night before after residents reported smelling gas.
He said the scene of the blast was “devastating”, and that there could be more deaths.
“We have a three-storey building that has completely collapsed – described from a demolition point of view as a pancake that has dropped almost straight down,” he said.
