Ah, Newark. One of my top US places never to visit.
biscovery t1_iuorb76 wrote
Newark has some of the best spanish/Portuguese food in the area and is a great city. Parts of it are dangerous but so was NYC in the 90s. I wouldnt travel half way around the country to go there but if youre in NYC area it os worth visiting.

Stop making me want to go...
biscovery t1_iuosyps wrote
Ironbound section is cool, lots of Brazilian/latin/spanish/Portuguese people so plenty of cool shit to do. They have Portuguese and a brazillian parade every year. Branch brook park has 2nd largest selection of cherry blossom trees in the country if memory serves and they have a huge festival every year. Even in NJ newark gets a bad rap but its a cool place.
Spore_monger t1_iupoov7 wrote
Krug's burgers are tops. But not Tops, that diner is great but waaaaay overpriced. They do make a killer lobster Mac and cheese.
biscovery t1_iuqha7f wrote
Everything at tops is good, its spendy but worth it. Bigger issue is the huge wait. Also worth it thou.

"In the area" dosen't give us much context, after all Tacobell has the best Mexican food, in the area of my small town.

I was born in Newark, NJ and attended high school in Newark. Great food! Lots of culture/history/personality. Are there areas I'd avoid? Of course, but that's anywhere.
Now I'm hungry for Pulaski BBQ and some pasteis de nata.
Also: it was cool to watch 'War of the Worlds' (2005) be filmed on Ferry Street in the Ironbound.

This but unironically. I don't want to have to deal with the type of tourist who judges the whole state based on Newark. More pretty state parks for me.

'Long gun' and referring to the governor as 'the democrat'?
Interesting wording.
OfficerBlind91 t1_iup0ltm wrote
Long gun is a very normal phrase meaning a rifle.

Rifle is normaler
tayroarsmash t1_iur4vkk wrote
Rifle only refers to a rifle. A long gun includes all guns that are not hand guns. A shotgun, for instance, is a long gun.

Or carbine etc.
It's literally a gun that is long as opposed to a 'hand gun', sized for a hand
Long gun is also a legal term in many states

Or shotgun.
corvid_booster t1_iup9700 wrote
Yeah, saying "long gun" has gotten a lot more common over, let's say, the last 10 years, certainly the last 20. I have to wonder what purpose it serves that "rifle" doesn't.
BendTheSpoonNeo t1_iupanef wrote
“Long gun” includes rifles and shotguns. Doubtful someone was shooting slugs but who knows maybe 🤷🏻♂️
Pallasite t1_iuqu2yh wrote
Slugs and shotguns are the only legal hunting guns in NJ

It’s not relevant. They were just trying to sound superior and smart

Because if you say "rifle" and it turns out to have been a shotgun or a carbine or whatever-the-fuck-else that just looks like a rifle to the guys who witnessed it from 20 yards, you'll have a bajillion gun nuts shattering their teeth in rage and playing pedant. Vague terms like "long gun" allow for the basics of a story to be communicated while the details are worked out with time.
Reinventing_Wheels t1_iupsajm wrote

I’ve heard “long gun” as a term for a while, nothing new, you can probably find the phrase in some older articles.
Austin_AD t1_iuow3tm wrote
It's not that I haven't heard the term before, but it's on the level of 'musket' to me.
In descending order:
Assault Rife
Rife
Long Gun
Musket

Classifications. If you ever look at a 4473 which is a background check there are three weapon categories, Long Gun (any rifle over 16 inches on barrel length essentially, shotguns, and such) Handgun (pistols, revolvers, AR pistols, Dracos, anything under 16 inches with a fixed brace) and other (items that are technically guns, most often used to refer to lowers and receivers) so legally speaking the gun was a Long Gun
Eat-My-Cloaca t1_iuosspl wrote
Growing up with guns there were 3 types
Handguns, shotguns, and long guns. It’s a nice catch all for any type of rifle (though honestly the modern AR/AK would’ve been completely out of the realm of consideration with my family growing up. Long gun is a deer rifle as far as we were concerned because that was the only rifle people could have)
Austin_AD t1_iuoupkz wrote

Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun.

I was raised in the mid atlantic, maybe it’s regional or just a family thing? I do appreciate the news using the term when they’re unsure of the weapon outside of “it’s a gun but not a pistol”

Re-AnImAt0r t1_iuqm9hh wrote
cops were shot, right? Did they have bullets inside of them expelled from cartridges or were they full of buckshot or have a huge hole blown through them by a deer slug expelled from a shell? It's not like the ammo is interchangeable between the two.....
If you know what ammo someone is shot with you know what type of weapon they were shot with.
tayroarsmash t1_iur58oi wrote
If it’s a slug they may not know immediately. It could have passed through them the wounds would be difficult to tell from a high caliber rifle.

why'd they refer to the governor as "the democrat"? No one asked his political affiliation. Are they trying to suggest that this shooting was somehow his fault?
