Wow! We stopped tinting my wife's cars about 20 years ago. She has a problem with direct sunlight because 1 eye doesn't blink. She kept getting hassled. This didn't exist then.

Thanks for the information!

Probably did exist but finding out about things like this is not easy, and was even harder in the Stone Age before widespread internet.

Only Dermatological conditions are listed on the application. I have the application because I experience sensitivity to glare. I don’t think optical issues apply.

What's odd since moving down to south Jersey, is almost everyone has super dark tints all around. The Philly drivers (I assume since so close) even have their front windshield limo black. I never see anyone pulled over either.

Holdmypipe t1_j26pc7y wrote

Lots of people in jersey have their front windshield tinted limo black as well. Whenever i visit my in laws in Woodbridge, I see it all over. Makes me wonder how tf that is legal and passes inspection.

Joe_Jeep t1_j26vm4v wrote

Its not but cops barely enforce that shit even though cars are consistently one of the 2 or 3 leading causes of death.

But yea just let everybody have blinding headlights, blacked out windows, and lifts so high you can't see most pedestrians in front of your truck that never sees dirt

riajairam t1_j27pqa4 wrote

We stopped having actual inspections years ago. Today all we have is a smog check.

20

dirty_cuban t1_j27df2o wrote

It’s not legal. Inspection in NJ is a joke. All they do is plug a computer in the OBD-II port to check the emissions system. If that passes the car can be falling apart and still pass.

Jaydog718 t1_j294ipr wrote

They look for catalytic converters on sport cars too. I had to show the guy last week here in Tom's River NJ when I saw him struggling and looking around under the hood. Mine was taking way longer than anyone else's n I asked him, looking for the cat? And he answered unwillingly, yeah. I had to show him.

4

aspoels t1_j298hzo wrote

Yeah not really.. I take mine to an independent shop for state inspection and all they cared about was the computer. Zero care for the fact that I have a 200 cell high flow cat

Jaydog718 t1_j29i7oa wrote

I went to the free state place. How much did independent charge you? My dad pays 26 bucks or something like that.

3

aspoels t1_j29igm7 wrote

It’s $50. I have them Mount and balance my tires and do most basic shop work… I accept the charge since I don’t want to spend thousands on stock exhaust parts that I didn’t get with the car, or go through any hassle about it

That word passes is a funny word. My truck failed because their computer said "System not ready" The inspection guy said "drive it for a while and the truck will learn" a week later the light came on. Took the truck to a local shop where they fudged to system and it passed. Three months later the light went out and all is well. Guess my truck is stupid.

It's crazy because in 2019 I got pulled over in Woodbridge for supposedly having my front windshield tinted (it wasn't) because I pulled out on 9 in front of a cop. Wasted a night having to drive for court to show proof. But years ago, man driving through South Plainfield, North Plainfield, Watchung and Scotch Plains with super tints was an automatic ticket.

6

Holdmypipe t1_j26q5k8 wrote

Yup, there are a lot of towns I avoid because of it. My car isn’t tinted, just the factory tint it came with for the back. But my wife’s car, forget about it! Limo tints all around except for the front windshield.

How do you know why someone got pulled over?

1

xiixiilxxv t1_j2787bc wrote

Seeing multiple cars all day long dark tinted out along with township police and state troopers passing them or even watching them; no one is ever pulled over solely based upon tints.

Tints and seatbelts are usually what’s given instead of a moving violation if the cop is nice (haha) or there is basically nothing of note on your abstract.

SweetWaterSurprise t1_j26wtkp wrote

Window tint is a reason to look in your car for something more serious. That's all they care about. Minimally they can give you the $50 fine, but the real goal is that you have anything legitimate to get you for. Just like the license plate frame deal.

16

ZookeepergameOk8231 t1_j27f6jh wrote

Exactly. Probable cause has been expanded to anything you can think of. Once they have you pulled over, it is game on to see if they can get in the vehicle to search it and run everything through the computer. All about generating cash.

4

Jake_FromStateFarm27 t1_j27ismj wrote

Probable cause has not been expanded in NJ if anything it's been far more hindered than anything in NJ recently. Don't wanna get your car searched don't keep firearms and ammo in plain sight together, don't have booze or drugs in the front cockpit visibly or smell of booze (NJ you cannot be searched based on smell of cannabis when pulled over which imo is wrong so many people smoking and driving since legalization and nothing we can do about it and there's been a raise in auto accidents since), don't have anything you're not supposed to in plain site and keep it in your trunk or in the back.

That all said, on a serious note if tints are more allowed and not a trqckable offensive I fear there will more likely be a raise in kidnapping or sexual assault events since you can fully enshroud your vehicle. This makes it easier for predators to manipulate those kidnapped and harder for them to send a distress signal in transit or when pulled over. I'm all for tints for eye sight purposes but you genuinely do not need it to be surround pitch limo black. Gradient options are just as effective and protective for real medical needs especially since most windshields nowadays are also polarized which is supposed to significantly help with light and glare.

riajairam t1_j27pusz wrote

Yes some years ago I got pulled over for an improper right turn on red. Cop made sure he looked in my rear windshield into the cargo area. Probably was checking for firearms or other weapons. He let me go.

1

pleiop t1_j263lim wrote

You can't tint the front wind shield and the two front side windows. Cops barely enforce it though. So it's a gamble. Mines are tinted. I figure if I get ticketed every couple of years its worth it 🤷‍♂️

6

zoicyte t1_j265zqi wrote

Same with the front license plate: legally you’re supposed to have plates on front and back of cars in nj but I haven’t installed a front plate on any of my cars since 2009 bc fuck that shit.

I haven’t gotten a ticket for lacking a front plate once. Not once.

VividToe t1_j26cnw8 wrote

What’s the issue with having a front plate?

7

megandr t1_j26plng wrote

Drilling holes in bumper when you have a nice car. Plus they're ugly.

Actually on one of my old car the factory license plate holder was covering intercooler so not only it was ugly, it was also hindering performance in one way or another.

−4

zoicyte t1_j2768l4 wrote

The hole drilling is the main thing for me.

That and the fact that front plates aren’t universally required kinda makes it obvious no one is dying over the issue. Cops need to see them when they’re talking you. I don’t drive backward that often.

Cruelintenti0ns t1_j271vrw wrote

I thought tints is a class 2 violation. Meaning you can’t get pulled over for it. But it can be an added ticket say if the reason for the stop was speeding.
