Hello, I am a graduate student. Yale student health is talking too long for a health problem that needs to be fixed asap. Who else can I go to in the area besides student health?

You can go anywhere you want. The question is how much you will pay for it. And it’s not like we can make a specific recommendation without a clue as to what specialty you need.

GI specialist

Try Digestive Disease Associates; no idea about cost of their services if they’re out of network for you (which I assume they are).

I had a terrible experience with Yale Student Health even going in with a diagnosed GI issue. I’ve had a great experience with PACT Gastro and happy to chat in DMs

Seconding PACT, they solved a medical mystery that had been ruining my life for years.

I just went to a great GI guy Westport if you can make it down there. He was at the Yale Digestive Health center there, not sure if it’s ok to give the doctor’s actual name on here though. It was like a month and half wait for the appointment though, I tried calling every number I could find on Google and that was the fasted I could be seen by a GI specialist, but I have state insurance so you might be luckier if you have private.

This is true unfortunately. I am also grad student who had a similar situation and have a few tips.

  • Do you have a pre-existing condition or a new issue? I have ulcerative colitis (have had it many years) and was having a severe flare earlier this year but they couldn’t get me in to GI for months. Eventually I just called Yale Health Student Health primary care and they were able to see me same day and prescribe me steroids. It isn’t a permanent fix but it restored my ability to function. You may have heard that Yale Health student health is horribly incompetent. This can be true. It really depends who you get. This approach works best if your condition is a chronic one and you know exactly what you need.
  • Acute care is also an option
  • Are you by chance still under 26 / on your parents insurance? If so, you could try going that route. See what’s in-network there and if you can make an appointment with GI without a referral, or if you can get a primary care Appt in network with that insurance and then GI referral through that
  • If your only insurance is yale student, you’re going to have a much tougher time. It’s a PPO meaning that they only cover in network, ie, at the student health center, unless you have a very specific referral out. Confusingly, not all yale physician groups are in network with yale student health. You can ask member services about specific doctors, but you might have a very tough time finding one that they’ll cover.

Feel free to DM me if you have more questions as well

Hate to break it to you it’s not just Yale, everywhere is backup

Unfortunately Yale Health is actually one of the fastest. If you need a specialist, you’ll need a referral most likely. Either way, you’ll have to pay out of pocket if it’s out of network (which anything non Yale will be if you’re Yale Health). The system is backed up nation wide, and especially in our local area.

I had a good experience with a GI doctor with Yale Health (employee health plan, not student). But it took a long time because everything was backed up (this was last fall). If you happen to need a referral for gallbladder / pancreas / biliary system issues, dm me for a few names. IMO the key is getting past the health plan doctors and into the care of real specialists. Also, it’s a PITA, but going to acute care helped to move the process along. Good luck.
