I am just graduating college and I am looking for a place to live in southern NH. I will be working in the office, but it's a hybrid setup so I don't mind a bit of a drive (<1hr). Does any have any suggestions of where the most fitting/fun place would be to move to? I enjoy going out and socializing, going to the gym, eating out, running, etc. I have a decent budget so I can probably make any city work.

Some updates because I wasn't specific enough:

Working in Salem NH, checked out Manchester, Nashua, Concord, and Portsmouth

Budget ~$1,800 per month, not opposed to a roommate/splitting rent

Southern New Hampshire stretches from Keene to Portsmouth. Where's your job located?

NH is small but it's not that small. Need more information!

For example: For fun, are you more interested in getting to Boston, or the White Mountains, or the ocean?

You should probably at least say where the office is actually located, so we can help you decide what's within an hour of that location.

From your description northern MA like Haverhill or Andover would be better. If you want socializing, nightlife, etc.

Manchester it Portsmouth.

If I was younger, I’d pick Portsmouth.

If you're in the Nashua-Merrimack-Bedford-Amherst area, then rent is pretty expensive for starting salaries. One example would be Slate apartments off Exit 10 on the turnpike in Merrimack at about $2,300 - $2,400 for a one-bedroom. The places are brand new.

If you could narrow down your area, then we could make more targeted recommendations.

Without knowing exactly where you work, I think Milford might be a good town to check out. There's a lot there, with Amherst and Nashua close by. Or there are quite a few nice small towns surrounding it, like Mont Vernon and Wilton.

I'd recommend Manchester. it's definitely the busiest city in New Hampshire

I've heard mixed things, what are the best areas to live within Manchester?

Lots of new apartments going up in and around downtown, that would be the ideal location so you can walk to bars and restaurants. Outside of that most neighborhoods are safe, and it is a small city so just a short drive to downtown from wherever you are. Only areas I would avoid would be the Kalivas Union neighborhood southeast of downtown and the Piscataquog neighborhood on the West Side.

Thank you! I think I'm leaning towards Manchester this is exactly the advice I was looking for.

I moved here about a year and a half ago after graduating from college and I love it. Underrated food scene, fun bars, nice parks. Plus it’s super convenient for everything, 1 hr to the mountains, beach, and Boston. I’m not really into running much myself but my favorite brewery, To Share, has a running club which sounds like something you might be interested in.

You probably want to be in some of the more populated areas: Nashua, Manchester, or Portsmouth.

A lot of your decision will be based on your budget.

What is the biggest difference between Nashua and Manchester?

Nashua is smaller, more sparse. Still has a city feel in some areas, but it doesn’t bustle with the quite the same life as Manchester does. Manch has a lot of college-aged/young adult folk who enjoy going out. Downtown can be pretty lively. Tons of restaurants/bars. You’ve got the arena there, too, where many events (concerts, graduations) are held. The city’s board does a good job keeping city events happening as well (food-themed events/local business promotion/etc.) If you are between these two and looking for fun, I’d say Manchester. You’d be close to work, and within two hours either direction you could be in Boston for a night out or on a hike in the mountains.
