I'm watching the Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent right now and there's flashes of Nick Cage action PRIME . He dropped these 3 action classics then became a more dramatic actor then a really over the top almost cartoon parody of himself now he's back doing some decent movies like Mandy, Colours out of Space and Pig but also some not so bad bad movies. But which of those 3 action classics was the best?

The Rock is the best as an actual complete film. Face/Off has the best combination of amazing action and unhinged performances. Con Air has slightly less amazing action but even more wildly unhinged performances.

Tl;dr all three rule

The Rock had the additional benefit of (potentially) showing us an older James Bond. I don't know if that rumor has been proven or disproven meanwhile, but I don't care. I just imagine that it's true. :-D

I’m not a “fan theory” guy but I think it fits this movie well enough to add another nice layer.

It’s a cool theory that would have worked better if they had made Mason former SBS rather than SAS considering that Bond was always a Commander in the navy rather than a Lieutenant Colonel in the army. But that is a minor quibble.

The Rock is the best movie. Face/Off is the silliest. Con Air has the best characters. They all good.

The Rock is my favorite of the three, but I love them all. I’d also add Gone in 60 Seconds to Cage movies I love

Really there's no choice that needs to be made. It's the perfect movie trifecta.

Clearly the Rock. Not only is it the best of those, but it's the best James Bond Movie too.

I always have a hard time giving a movie "the best" ranking, when it can only really exist in reference to other movies. Like if you were to pick one James Bond movie, you'd pick one of the actual James Bond movies. One that is the best in its own right. You wouldn't pick The Rock, because that movie doesn't make sense as a Bond movie without the other Bond movies for reference.

MentosEnCoke t1_j9xj82j wrote

Well, you really only need one James Bond movie for reference, and then that's like saying you can't pick a sequel as the best movie in a franchise.

What's your favourite Captain America movie, it has to be the first one kinda deal.

Only Con Air has John Malkovic and Steve Buschemi, not to mention Colm Meaney and John Cussack (and more), I have most love for Con Air cause of the cast and what they have them doing.

It’s probably not the best film but it’s the one I like the most.

Con Air is amazing. It will always be an iconic movie. Most of it is too stupid for words, but that’s what makes it so much better. The cast is amazing too. It wins by a billion miles.

Con Air is the best of the three; but admittedly, The Rock probably feels the most modern/streamlined.

I'd probably say Con Air for sheer popcorn entertainment and Face/Off for the closest John Woo was allowed to translate his Hong Kong blood opera style to Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking. I've never actually cared for The Rock and always felt it was where Michael Bay's "Bayisms" were beginning to take hold with the overly long runtime and overly sombre military scenes mixed with Bay's trademarked juvenile humor.

I like your assessment and definitely agree. Even thinking about it, I really only like the first half or so of The Rock. It over stays it welcome shortly after the mission goes awry (shower scene massacre), imo.

The Rock is the best.

Face/Off is the most ridiculous. But in a good way.

Con Air is my favorite. Put. The Bunny. Back. In the box.

Honestly, they are all good. The Rock is a great action and suspense film and definitely Michael Bay's best work. Face/Off is amazingly insane and hilarious. Con Air is extremely cheesy but one great joy ride.

Woooo nice combo right there!
Con Air is pretty cool and pure entertainment, The Rock just by havind the gread Connery on it makes it faboulous and well the story and action sequences are pretty good. But Face Off MAAAAAAN, intense and groundbreaking with excelence performancesby both actors. Cage's Sean Archer as Castor Troy is so amusing that you can wathc him over and over and still enjoy it.
Anyway great Nick Cage 3logy.

For me it's The Rock > Face/Off > Con Air. I liked all movies and Nic Cage but it's also on who he is bouncing off with. Con Air just didnt have Travolta nor Sean Connery.

Face/Off, no question.

The Rock and Con Air are a helluva lot of fun, but neither are as imaginative, as intense or as freakishly over the top as Face/Off. Face/Off is a perfect blend of high concept and high action; manages to be a blockbusting '90s action shoot-em-up while also pulling off this weird, nightmarish Twilight Zone plot. It's a goddamn experience.

I love this question, it's a debate you can have endlessly without losing any respect for anyone no matter what their opinion is (see also: which Star Wars prequel is the worst).

They're all terrific. For me it's probably Face / Off but Con Air could overtake it depending on mood

Con air was pure energy.

Cage in rock was kinda whiny until he grew balls.

Creepy cage was creepy good in face off.

Why didn't they use cage in villain/anti hero roles?

Winner is con air.

Con Air followed by Face/Off.

Always felt The Rock should’ve been a better film seeing the cast, but it’s a film that leaves no breathing room. It’s like every actor is hyping something and it never gets to its destination. I will say that Arnold was suppose to be the Nick Cage role, I feel if he hadn’t passed up on it I think that movie would’ve worked for me.

improper84 t1_j9yomh8 wrote

The Rock is objectively the best movie of the three. Face/Off is awesome, but in a dumb and ridiculous way. Same with Con Air, but with a healthy splash of racism that doesn’t hold up terribly well.
