Thank you for saying this. Mental health crises on college campuses remains a serious concern. I myself like many others have lost friends to the tragedy of suicide and one of those tragedies occurred in a dorm environment. The demand for performance, social isolation within crowds, lack of academic support, bleak living conditions, and absence of substantive emotional connection or uplifting community relationships is traumatic for students at any stage in their academic careers. In the last 10 years, there have been 14 suicides at just one local college campus, with no publication due to "privacy concerns."

I go to a smaller university, and it’s strange they will report when students pass away from heart attacks or natural causes, but when one of our students takes their life (whether that be on campus or at home), very rarely is a school-wide email sent notifying us.

I can’t get accommodations in college without jumping through a hundred loops and filling out a six pound packet even though I had a 504 plan in high school, and have endless documentation for my ADHD induced by PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder, and OCD. At that point I gave up.

For a student considering taking their life, the last thing they’re doing is jumping through hoops and taking the time to fill out that much information. If our college was the size of WPI, our rates would be on par with theirs which is sad considering how much smaller of a school we are. I apologize for the rant, it just pisses me off.

There is so little real support even if someone has a plan especially it seems when ADHD is mentioned. Most professors do not help in a way that works for the student. I know someone who could run circles around other students in knowledge but her ADHD+ prevented her from writing papers or even verbally transcribing them. If the professor sat down to discuss the subject matter, they were always impressed with the in-depth understanding. That was the exception not the rule in spite of the plan. The students profession was never going to include documentation. She never graduated and often considered suicide for not being “normal”.

I don’t think colleges have improved anything exception talking points and publicity.

Yeah that's a heartbreaking one to see as I get the week started and get ready to kick off a workday. Unreal how mental health is STILL such a tough topic to put in a spotlight. It was posted earlier in the comments here - dial 988 if you need help. Check in, PM, say hi to a friend.

Please know you're not alone.

Ugh. That poor baby that thought this was a solution. And their poor parents. College life can be fun. But so stressful, especially if your emotional toolbox doesn't have enough in it. Campuses are addressing mental health pretty decently in this area but there is always room for improvement. My niece is a junior this year. During her freshman year which was 2020, her dorm pod mate killed himself after all the isolation, and feeling like he'd exposed his dorm pod mates to COVID. Suicide is a permanent solution to what might be a temporary problem. Please seek help, even if its talking to someone. Please call 988 if you are feeling like you need to hurt yourself, or go to the ER.

How sad. May this person RIP. Thoughts for the students traumatized by this.

Allegedly, the person who drove their car into the barrier at Alewife was an apparent suicide.

Please, support the work of mental health professionals. It isn't a glamorous or supported profession. People aren't going into the profession as much as they used to.

paganlobster t1_j7gnteq wrote

Just an aside, that bit about the Alewife accident being intentional was from a police brief and therefore should be taken with a giant grain of salt.

This breaks my heart. Mental health is health and the world needs to understand that and support those in need. I hope this persons family and loved ones find strength during this awful time. No one should feel like this.. Just 8 days ago something similar happened in Methuen - we need support and love and change ✨🤍

You should know, that the moderators can see the post you delete.

I bring it up because 1) many people reported your post. 2) because we have a few people who wrongfully think if they delete it later, there will be no consequences.

I am going to leave things "as is" for now. Because, sure, you took care of it yourself. But next time, what you say and do, is going to matter.

You claiming it was auto-erotic asphyxiation is the very definition of a rumor. You calling names is just pathetic, especially for a 56 year old. Grow up.
