Oof. That pie was FIRE. Their mushrooms pizza has evolved/changed, but it was a thing of beauty crammed with a ton of shrooms of various types. We are huge fans so it is disheartening to see this place get so much hate/disdain by people who take exception to their success. I get it... it sucks that it has become nigh impossible to snag a last minute reservation, and their FOH staff could be more pleasant, but the pizza is good and Dan himself is often there (overseeing things, and even working the kitchen/oven) and it shows in its quality and consistency.

“I used to got to Razza before the NYT review” is the food cousin of the tried and true, “I used to listen to [insert band here], before they were popular.”

Lol, I went on a Scott's Pizza Tour with some friends before the NYT review and asked about Razza and Scott just went on and on about how awesome Dan was and how it was probably the best pizza around, etc, etc. Does that make me a Pizza Hipster, too?

Agreed, bar majestic was great. So was park and sixth and the merchant before that.

Maybe cause subculture also has a meatloaf sandwich called the bat out of hell?
BadNewsBenjamin t1_isvxt3a wrote
Woah, I had no idea! (I’ve only had subculture twice and didn’t love it…) any good?
pigdog12 t1_isvy3ro wrote
Never had it. I usually stick to their baked ziti in a bread sub when I want all of the carbs. Their mom is in the kitchen, so you know the ziti’s gonna be good. But outside that I find them very hit or miss.

But it really just goes to show how the NYT review was instrumental in the success. Not knocking success because success is success, but I used to go to Razza at least biweekly pre 2017. Since 2017 I’ve gone 2 times because I can’t easily get a table unless I stalk a reservation at midnight.
They’ve become a hype restaurant.
SyndicalistCPA t1_ist28ae wrote
Yeah, but love it or not, Dan seems like a pretty swell guy.
scubastefon OP t1_istmxqo wrote
can't really call it hype if they've been keeping it going for five years since that article.
Informal_Bat_722 t1_ista3mp wrote
how dare they become successful. dont they know /u/Miringanes only eats at places that aren't popular?
Miringanes t1_isu7c8p wrote
Nah bro, you got it all wrong. I don’t eat there because I don’t feel like staying up till midnight on a Saturday to make a reservation for the following Friday.
Informal_Bat_722 t1_isuczif wrote
Lol. Ok let me change my comment
>don't they know /u/Miringanes only eats at places that caters to their whim and massages their entitlement?
I've literally never had an issue with getting reservations, or even just walk ups. & I've gone more frequently than 2 times in the past 5 years.
slipperyzoo t1_isw4j56 wrote
Yeah I mean like, I place an order for pickup an hour before I want to eat, then I go there and pick it up. I know a couple times they stopped taking online/phone orders, so I just went there, placed an order, and chilled in the area while waiting.
lukasbarton t1_isuwao5 wrote
FWIW I’m pretty sure they release reservations at noon, one week in advance.
biso_21 t1_it2jrgd wrote
Yup this is exactly what they do, and it's really not too hard to snag when they release - and man, is it worth it. Given how ridiculously light their pies are they are worth getting fresh out the oven vs delivery or even take home, where, while still great, they cool off pretty fast
BeMadTV t1_isvs0cl wrote
I love how people here get knocked for eating at other places instead of the place every one goes to that sells what is sold every five blocks.
FunCandy8149 t1_iu77c01 wrote
Wait they take reservations now😳 every time I was talked it’s walk in only give your name etc so I stopped bothering
Miringanes t1_iu8u5e5 wrote
Yes, if you want to eat pizza next Friday they have a few reservations between 5-6 and 8 onward. If you know you’re going to want pizza next Friday though.
Lobelliot t1_isu1imi wrote
It's a lot of hype but I wouldn't call it a hype restaurant. The food and drinks are consistently astounding. But yeah, being a local, it's not as fun when you have to wait up to 2hrs just because of the hype
electric_creamsicle t1_isvt12i wrote
Idk the few of times I ordered take out from Razza while living in downtown JC I never really dealt with crazy wait times. Even on a Friday or Saturday night it was only an hour max.
I moved to Philly and ordering from Pizzeria Beddia is a crapshoot. I've gone on to see what the wait on takeout is and I've seen 200-300 minutes 90% of the time.
Both make amazing pizza. I haven't actually sat down at either but I'd guess it's actually easier to get a table at Beddia because they have a good amount of space.
FunCandy8149 t1_iu773f9 wrote
Really? Wow many many times their takeout “slots”were taken and I would be turned down. However whenever I did success to order take out around 6pm they would say 35min the timing was on the dot I was soooo shocked how they timed it to the exact min.
flapjack212 t1_istg8e0 wrote
idk why that other guy chalked it to being some kind of counter-culture idea when you clearly say you don't go anymore because you can't get a table lol
i think the pizza here is excellent Neapolitan, i did their takeout sometimes to avoid the line, that said i find it on the pricey side so tend more frequently opt for other cheaper styles
i actually think porta is pretty decent too but it's not really cheaper so it's only better from the perspective of seating availability haha
slipperyzoo t1_isw434t wrote
People complaining about trying to get pizza here CLEARLY haven't tried getting one from Bread and Salt. It's almost just an urban legend at this point.
STMIHA t1_iswz5ux wrote
Right? I’ve waited for days just to get last licks at bread and salt, Meanwhile I’ve gone on spontaneous dates here and never had to wait more than 30 min for a spot. Especially now that they expanded. It’s all about timing.

Miringanes t1_istir16 wrote
Yeah people are grouchy here.
Was simply saying I’m glad they’re successful, but their success scaled faster than their ability to cope with it. Which in my perspective is a downfall because only a select few get to go. If I can’t eat somewhere because it’s impossible to, i just move on to the next place and wish them continued luck.
It’s the hospitality industry and waiting up till midnight to secure a table for the following Friday isn’t very hospitable

it’s really not that hard if you go to their website and look at their hours?
slipperyzoo t1_isxq1n1 wrote
Except for the whole having to wait in line for hours only to find out they don't have any left. If it were as simple as checking their hours I wouldn't have mentioned it. But thanks for your useless advice. Go stand in line for me then.
Ilanaspax t1_it2888t wrote
Lmao you can order online and pick it up asshole - I’ve never waited in line to get pizza there. This is all info found on their IG and website.
Try straying from the Uber eats app once in awhile and live a little.
