Looking to put an offer down on a place in the Heights but was curious if there was any free transfer between the Light Rail and Path? Looks like if I don't wanna take the bus, I'd have to take the Light Rail at Congress down to the Path at Newport but I'm curious if I'd have to pay separately for both, coming and going? Can't seem to find any info online about this so any help would be appreciated!

No free transfer unfortunately. The systems are run by different operators - the light rail is NJ Transit and PATH is Port Authority.

The reason the Heights is more affordable is because the public transportation is horrible compared to downtown

Hey let’s be fair….it’s horrible for everybody on the weekends.

Just take the bus. There’s no efficient way to get to a path station from the heights.

Depending where you are in the Heights and your physical abilities, it can be very walkable. I'm a 20 minute walk from Journal Square PATH and like 25 from Hoboken. Beats waiting for the unreliable light rail for sure.

I don’t live that close to them but I think even if I did I would still rather take the bus most of the year for several reasons.

A lot of people have bus phobia. I used to take the jitney from Hutton to JSQ. It'd be like 8 minutes. If it was nice out I'd skateboard down hill but never the reverse.

EDIT: bus phobia or an aversion to bus travel.

I get extremely motion sick on the bus, especially the ones going into the tunnel with all the start and stop motion. Would pick LR to Hoboken path over the bus any day.

As others have pointed out, forget about Newport and instead opt for Hoboken. By the time the PATH arrives in Newport, it is fairly crowded, but riding from Hoboken is comparatively pleasant. The same is even more true for the return trips, where trains to JSQ are always uniformly crowded, while the ones heading to Hoboken usually have seats available.

You expect different operators to work together to make your experience better? Hahahahaha.

You see, NJ Transit is run by the state of New Jersey, and the Port Authority is run jointly by the... state of New Jersey (and New York), so... reasons.

No but u can take 85 to hoboken and take the path from them , tho I prefer to just take a bus straight to nyc (119, 123 or 125)

i've taken the both, I would walk down the stairs to 2nd street and the walk to hoboken path. yes it's kind of alot but most part it worked. *usually * no one checks the light rail tickets but they will once and a while and I just had the ticket ready on my phone when that does happen

You’re part of the problem. It’s an honor system, if they don’t check it doesn’t mean it’s free. Do you walk into a grocery store and if they don’t check just walk out with merchandise?

I said usually, I have tickets it's not like I don't want to use them. i've bought so many so they're handy when I need to USE them. i'm not the problem. it's their fault they don't check. why am I gunna keep wasting money on tickets every time I ride the light rail when I already have 5+ of them readily to use. 🤷

thebruns t1_ir0qmx3 wrote

You are the problem. The rule is to validate your ticket.

1

jjvvllxx t1_ir0qxzx wrote

why? for what. no one's checking. it will be validated when I see them come my way. or as I exit the light rail. they're not gunna know if validated on the light rail and or exit when I leave. either way it's validated and in use. they don't care.

Didn’t we just establish in a previous thread that Walgreens won’t chase you? Try to keep up.

Do you think the people driving the train should only be paid occasionally? You are an idiot.

People who steal are stupid and shortsighted. And they deserve to be stolen from.

People who sympathize with thieves (like u/Ilanaspax ) also deserve to be stolen from.

Wow if someone doesn’t pay for a lightrail ticket the conductor’s pay gets withheld? They should really do something about that.

An honor system is for honorable people, you are not one of them - Got it. But you are the problem to an honor system, you should at least own up to that.

Ilanaspax t1_ir0amrx wrote

On the plus side if you take the lightrail regularly enough without paying you usually break even once they eventually bust you for not having a ticket. Downvote away nerds!

Equivalent_Base901 t1_irl1jqu wrote

No, the two entities are unconnected so no free transfer. However, if you buy a monthly pass for the light rail, you get free zone 1 on the bus so you’ll have options on getting to a PATH station.
