I'm not buying one this year since I'm waiting for the usb-c iphones but i just checked out the 14 pro irl and I was bothered by how big the pill looked in its default size. The sliver of light coming from its separation from the top bezel makes it look worse than a notched iphone what the hell. Do you guys think this gonna be around for a long time? it seems pretty useless if you don't use the stopwatch, music and etc. and seems more to be like an attempt to differentiate for the sake of it than actual new features. Remember apple promised app developers will do crazy, wonderful things with force touch but that went nowhere.

I’m mostly used to it, and I personally still find it more useful than just a large block at the top doing nothing. Perhaps Apple can still tweak it to make it less annoying, though the shape may stay the same as long as the front facing camera and Face ID are in the same place.

It’s a very small thing, but I really wish they would make the microphone and camera dots stay between the camera and the FaceID sensor array. Right now they keep moving around, sometimes in between and sometimes pushed all the way towards the top right edge. Otherwise, I am a happy camper with the Dynamic Island and find myself using it quite often.

Yeah, I find that a bit weird. And I guess they can’t make them tiny cam or mic icons instead.

I love using it for calls and music for shortcuts. Also loving the live activities for sports now I can go into apps while seeing the score which is awesome.

iOS 16.1 came out 2 days ago… the 3rd party stuff will come down the line, but I don’t expect it to be some kind of magical game changer, just a nice to have.

As far as the new pill cutout yeah you get used to it in about 2 minutes but I guess everyone is different in that regard.

I actually think that except for video consumption it looks much better than the notch! Also lots of cool animations and it hosts lots of notifications from the system as well as the calls and live activities which is pretty cool

I notice it as much as I did the notch, basically never. Content is 95% below the dynamic island anyway…

I’m used to it! It’s super convenient when I want to quickly change the song or pause it and I don’t feel like swiping or app switching.

It works with any media player I’ve used, not just the native Music app. Spotify and YTM, discord for voice calls etc.

Immediately use to it. I forget it’s there and I only really notice it when I’m playing music or in a call.

Beateride t1_itwjf6j wrote

Honestly, i immediately forgot about it, I thought it would take time but as soon as I was using the phone, I erased it.
Probably because I was used by the notch

And even when I'm looking at zoomed images, I know it's there, but it feels so much like a full screen compared to the big notch on the X that I'm just "wow, full screen picture" (weird I know)

I'm only noticing it when using live activities, but it blend so well with apps that I'm used to it already

I’ve tried it but decided like you to wait for usb-c. It’s a two handed thing unfortunately, unless you use reachability.

It’s still quite under baked, definitely feels like waiting a year for it to mature is the right play to me.

CRAZEDDUCKling t1_itwgney wrote

If the notch is anything to go by, Apple won’t update the island whatsoever for at least a few years.

RandyLeRam t1_itwievt wrote

I meant more integration with more first party apps and fixing bugs etc. but yeah I guess it’s here for at least 3 years.

Genuinely just curious to understand as this is a common view here - why is USB-C so important to you? I just see it as a different charger cable that I need to carry and don’t really understand why that matters

RandyLeRam t1_itzbu2d wrote

Speed for me. Lightning is shite for data transfer. If they had upgraded lightning to usb3/thunderbolt speeds I’d be equally as happy.

I know wireless is a thing, but you can’t beat a fast cable for large files.

I find it to be quite useful. Like someone else said, it took a few minutes to get used to it, not a big deal. However, being able to tap it while music is playing and have it take you into the app you’re using is excellent. I’ll regularly be on Reddit or in Messages and if I want to quick jump back to Spotify I can tap up top. I know I could swipe up to recently used, or access it through Control Center, but I find it to be pretty convenient. I hope devs can do some cool stuff with it in the future.

It’s like the touchbar on Macs, a gimmick. It’ll die in a few years

It’s never been an issue for me. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don’t find it more obtrusive than a notch. The notch was never an issue for me either though.

_Suspended_Account_ t1_itxtjxg wrote

I’ve had the 14 Pro for about a week, and it hasn’t bothered me at all 🤷‍♂️ It’s no more/less intrusive than the notch.

As for the features it has, I’ve interacted with it a couple times, but I don’t see it being a big part of my life.

Hopefully one day no pill and no notch. It’s def worse than the notch in terms of looks (and for videos cuts off more of your display). But, my guess is we are stuck with it for at least 2 years.

shrimpynut t1_itygn9w wrote

I say 5 years or so tbh, iPhone 20. Apple is not going to just get rid of it after a year or two because they have spent millions developing it and more than likely have a team now dedicated to its development.

jpopsong t1_iud5ly0 wrote

Finally, someone who agrees the notch and the pill/island are just pathetic interference with a normal full screen! Why won’t Apple just kill the damn notch and island. Who would want their television with a notch or island??? No one! Give us back a normal full screen! People have become such ardent iPhone fans they’ll defend anything. I’ve only bought iPhones ever, but the notch/pill/island is a huge disappointment.

sOFrOsTyyy t1_iudz937 wrote

I get that they haven’t found a way to make the Face ID setup smaller. But the least they could have done was move the pill all the way to he top of the display (which would also make the black plastic around the pill smaller at the top) so we don’t have to have videos cut off. Moving it down is just so un-Apple in terms of design quality or thoughtfulness.

hazmatt_05 t1_itxdii5 wrote

I got used to it almost immediately, though some of the apps I use are yet to adapt their UI around it. Cutting into 18:9 video has also been less of a deal than I thought it would be.

However, I rarely interact with it unless I’m listening to music on public transport. But I would like to see it further implemented by developers.

kataran1 t1_itxmlbx wrote

Nothing to get use too it was there when I powered my device on and it works great especially FaceID

Leek5 t1_ity9aj8 wrote

I got use to it pretty fast. I kinda like the island

Big-Consideration153 t1_ityct53 wrote

I rate they wouldn’t have invested so much into the cutout for one year so likely should be around for another 3 years maybe… It’s my understanding that the Dynamic Island works via “Live Activities” so if developers support Live Activities then the Dynamic Island should be fine long-term as a software feature.

I rate 3D Touch just didn’t quite have a means for users to easily discover the feature, it went unnoticed by most (I LOVED it) so idk if it was worth the time to develop a feature around it in an app only for users never to use it.

Just got my iPhone 14 pro max yesterday. Upgrading the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Took me about 10 minutes to get used to it. I love it.

Overall. Not a major difference tho. Which is what I was expecting.

You won’t regret it tho!

I really like it. At first I wasn’t sure but I love how it integrated the music player and I’m constantly using it so switch song.

shrimpynut t1_itygim4 wrote

I much prefer the dynamic island over the notch that had no purpose besides to hide stuff. I didn’t notice the notch after a while and the transfer between notch to dynamic island is the same, barely notice it until something goes up to it.

Inserthouse235 t1_ityj1cz wrote

Never noticed it. Went from iPhone 11 to iPhone 14 Pro Max and never saw any changes except in screen clarity and crisp movements. Cannot complain about the island. It is a niche feature to have. :D

More or less, I'm used it.
Considering the 15s are rumoured to have this on all models. Yes, I think it'll stick at least for now. But I'm basing that off said rumours.
As for app utilization, 16.1 just came out and that opened the door for devs to take more advantage of the DI so it'll be used a lot more than just stock app as it was in 16.0

Desperate_Drive8891 t1_itzlxt8 wrote

I’m happy with it. Truth be, it is absolutely useless, but is also pretty and nice to look it. When I’m anxious, I sometimes play with the silent mode switch on the phone to make dynamic island pop. Feels somewhat like a famous zippo click to me. I do not like to zoom into videos, so it does not interfere with my activities otherwise.

Kaessa t1_iu5ge3s wrote

Eh. It's just a thing. I rarely even notice it. The only time I ever DO notice it is when I'm listening to music or talking on speakerphone and I'm watching the "voice meter" thing go up and down. Other than that it's basically invisible to me.
