I heard this story somewhere... teach them to buy headphones early, they wouldn't have money for drugs ever in their lives.

What drugs are we talking about. We are all junkies here

Not gonna lie, hitting a set of nice headphones after a fat bong toke is an experience like none other.

HD660s with a BTR5 and he sat listened to the entire Back to Black album by Amy (which sounds amazing on these) didn’t move an inch. Very pissed when I had to put them away. Thankfully I keep these in a locked cabinet so he won’t go grab these when he wants to listen on his own.

I disagree. Subjecting him to the infamous Sennheiser Veil early on will prepare him for even better appreciation of a truly open and resolving audio experience later in life.

SmartOpinion69 t1_j5madu8 wrote

i disagree. you're supposed to subject him to the lowest of low-fi headphones ever and then slowly work your way up to the hd600 which he would then have a greater appreciation for. if the he-1 was the only headphone you ever wore, you would never appreciate it

Extrapaj t1_j5nlvxb wrote

Maybe you would appreciate the music then instead.

Exciting-Mine-4300 t1_j5qhk3y wrote

I think the 660S is not veiled at all, especially if you EQ it doesn't sound that different from my Hifiman Arya treble response. I think the legend is mostly about the 650/6XX which are definitely darker in the treble. I think even the 600 is not veiled.

It's jokes now, but please opt for volume-limited headphones when buying the kiddos their headphones

18

crod242 t1_j5n79jr wrote

how does that work exactly?

2

fuzeebear t1_j5n7ki5 wrote

There's an integrated circuit in the headphones that puts a cap on the voltage so it can never exceed X amount.

9

crod242 t1_j5n7w83 wrote

is it possible to add something like this via an adapter that works with existing headphones?

1

fuzeebear t1_j5n8eyj wrote

Kinda. You can use an adapter to reduce the voltage to cheapo sensitive headphones. https://ifi-audio.com/products/ear-buddy/

That "hifi" adapter and the integrated circuit in the kids' phones , in the end, do the same thing

2

crod242 t1_j5n94yg wrote

my fear is that I'm going to switch between hd600s and meze 99s and forget to turn the gain switch on my amp off then rupture my eardrums

do you think something like that adapter could reduce it enough to prevent them from deafening me if that happened?

1

Broad_Term3895 t1_j5o2ivd wrote

Nope if you have strong amp. Ear buddy can limit only by 12db and Ifi iematch by 24db.

dan_bodine t1_j5n0ucn wrote

How do these compare the 6xx?

5

Exciting-Mine-4300 t1_j5qgvd9 wrote

I had them both, 660S is more detailed and energetic sounding but not as warm as the 6XX in the midbass. However the 660S doesn't have the natural timbre and smoothness of the 6XX/600 and also the treble tuning bothers me a bit, since above 10k they definitely need EQ since they sound too recessed. With EQ they are the best objectively of the 6x0 line (if you don't mind a bit more artificial timbre). I personally love the 600 the best as my absolute reference headphone for tuning or just overall enjoyment, they just sound the most natural to my ears.

1

fyryaal t1_j5ra65l wrote

I like HD600 but it lacks the warm bass texture of the HD650. HD600 bass is good with EQ but bit dry.

1

Exciting-Mine-4300 t1_j5s0yj6 wrote

Yes for sure, if you love 650 bass then probably the 600 won't be your preference tuning wise. For me I have the Hifiman Arya (with EQ) for bass heavy tracks when I want some punch/slam.

1

fyryaal t1_j5vgbd0 wrote

The bass is as heavy on the 600 it just has a better sound/texture on the 650

1

ChromicClaw2 t1_j5nrv86 wrote

They're imo worse than the 6xx and any other headphone in it's lineup..

−4

rodo1986 t1_j5nw4b2 wrote

That is a bold statement, can you back it up with some arguments?

4

ChromicClaw2 t1_j5qxf7y wrote

I didn't mean they're worse objectively, just that they sound the worst to me.

Consider getting something that is lighter on the head for your child. Those Sennheisers can be uncomfortably clampy even to some adults.

Hard to find lighter headphones than those. Also the clamp should not be too bad on a head that small.

they are very light + his head is super small already so shouldnt be a prob.

any lighter would be IEMs or KSC75 + headband mod lol
