I'm guessing the southern ocean circling Antarctica allows the polar vortex to stay pretty contained.

Ice caps are growing again, lung is getting bigger. Remember climate positive news is never shared by news outlets because "it does not get enough clicks".

Hadochiel t1_j8rba28 wrote

I'm actually fine with positive news regarding the climate not being shared too much, as not nearly enough is done about climate change.

There's enough deniers around, you wouldn't want them to get more ammo for their "see? There's no climate problem" gun

DeepSpaceNebulae t1_j8t0mmd wrote

It’s slightly more complicated than “it’s growing”

If you’re talking about Antarctica, it has warmed (at a rate much faster than elsewhere) which increases precipitation. In the short term that means more cumulative snowfall and ice build up. Long term, that trend will reverse as the warming losses begin to outweigh the precipitation increase

If you’re talking and in the arctic, then that is very misleading. While, yes, the winter has ice sheets growing at rates faster than decades ago, it is melting at even faster rates in the summer. So in the end every year has less and less ice

Why's there so much less snow in the South than in the North?

Not a lot of land near Antarctica.

boones_farmer t1_j8odzky wrote

Yeah, wow looked up the latitudes. Never realized how close North America and Europe really are to the North Pole relative to the southern portions of other continents. Crazy

dlte24 t1_j8powt1 wrote

Probably because you're so used to the northern hemisphere taking up more space than the south on a lot of map projections (like Mercator).

To give an idea, the southernmost tip of africa is 34.5 degrees south

The southernmost tip of South America is 55.9 degrees south.

The top of north america is 83.1 degrees north.

The top of europe is 71 degrees north.

Virtually all of alaska is more northern than this is southern

Canada doesn't even start til 41.6 degrees north. Maine goes 47 degrees north.

May have to update that if things keep this way for long. It's the "dead of winter" and it's 50-60F in New England this week.

9

tlamy t1_j8s4nbx wrote

That's so odd! Here in Arizona it's been the same temperature this week, and even had a little bit of snow in Tucson on Tuesday night. It's been nice and chilly, with drizzles of rain :)

2

Gamebird8 t1_j8pha5a wrote

I mean, we get those occasionally. New England is well know for it's weirdly out of season weather every so often.

Now, the real point of contention here is that winters have been much milder, where 15 years ago it would be 10-20°F it's now 25-35°F and snow doesn't really stick to the ground anymore, usually coming and then melting the next day or so.

1

Doortofreeside t1_j8ppgy5 wrote

Yeah, one week could just be weather, but the climate change in my lifetime has been so noticeable. Boston just isn't a wintry location most of the time anymore. If only climate change could do something about the darkness...

Of course it's fitting that our snowiest winter ever has happened recently, which bucks the trend. And (I think?) the coldest day of my lifetime happened this year during one of the warmest winters in record.

1

Gamebird8 t1_j8ptgzu wrote

Climate Change creates weather extremes.

It's worth noting how mild the winter is, but when it's actually cold..... it get's really cold. You could convince me that 0-10°F doesn't exist and I'd believe you

A person of 80 years would take 672,768,000 breaths. If the earth was a living being taking one seasonal breath every year, that’s 4 billion breaths, the earth as a living being would be equivalent to 5 lifetimes.

Kind of a roundabout way to hypothetically imagine the earth as a giant old wise living being with a nasty infestation of humans.

Let’s hope Gaia’s immune system doesn’t kick in.

Lando1619 t1_j8sh4uq wrote

If this is accurate, it’s actually pretty crazy to me that only like ~30% of the earth sees snow.. and I have to see it for 8 months out of the year. Fucking Canada.

SjurEido t1_j8x3x16 wrote

I'm confused. I though the "seasons" rotated around the globe based on the angle of our axis in relation to the sun as we orbited it.

This makes it seem that Earth experiences the same season planet wide simultaneously.

What am I missing?

tjt5754 t1_j91dehj wrote

Look more closely at how the snow at the tip of South America is offset by 6mos from the snow up north. Also if you look at Australia you'll see a brown/green cycle that matches as well.

Fact is there just isn't much land far enough south to show the snow cover that makes this more visible in the north.

Northern hemisphere winter happens when the Earth is relatively close to the Sun in its orbit, so we have that going for us. Winters would be colder and summers hotter if we were farther from the Sun during our winter.

−3

unhearme t1_j8r17eb wrote

The orbit around the Sun while elliptical is almost circular. Closest 91million miles, furthest 94 million miles.

The coldness during winter is due to the tilt of the earth more than a minor change in distance. Seasons change because of the tilt of the Earth which orbits the Sun about a tilted axis of 23 degrees.

During Winter in the North, the North Pole is tilted away from the Earth so the North has less direct rays from the sun while the South is tilted towards the Sun with more direct rays causing Summer.
