FYI - Apparently they’re traditional Chinese characters for “tears” (top) and “city” (bottom).

I didn’t see any translations here so I plugged this into Google Translate.

how do you translate script from a picture? Sounds like advanced Google-Fu to me.

FargusDingus t1_j7lrpdq wrote

Pull up the image on your monitor. Pull out Google translate on your phone. Use the camera translate feature and point at your monitor. Very handy for text that I have no idea how to type the characters.

I screenshot it, crop to just the portion containg text, and analyze it using Google lens on Android. I'm not op but I tried and it worked fine

On Pixel, in the app switcher view, tap Select, tap the picture. Then select Google Lens and you can then select translate.

It’s the present dayJapanese kanji fir castle at the bottom and one strike away from the current kanji for tears at the top.

Very interesting that this artist chose an old Chinese kanji with a huge red circle at the bottom - kind of Japanese flag imagery.

likesleague t1_j7mrxsk wrote

The top kanji is the modern Japanese for tears. Computer fonts often have the top stroke horizontal but it's the same kanji.

Ctotheg t1_j7mt0e6 wrote

Interesting. Can you show me a source showing OP’s alternative variant of the kanji, please?

The tears to rain I get, very nice.

But the rain in front of the cars is confusing. Different shape, and looks like it's coming out of nowhere.

I'd edit it out if It were me, but overall nice design.

I think the idea is it is supposed to be backlit by the headlights, since there are no other bright lights in the picture.

AxRandomxMoment t1_j7lpvl4 wrote

Maybe, but it still doesn't explain why the shapes are different.

its legit rain. Yes, she is crying, but she's also out in the rain.

Paranitis t1_j7n88ag wrote

She's crying due to the rain accumulating on her giant statue head and finding that path.

Unstopapple t1_j7o4vwf wrote

or she stepped on a lego. Imagine how hard it is to avoid them when your feet take up half the room.

Frostygale t1_j7ocqbe wrote

She is crying, and it is raining. Interestingly, the giant tears in the background are hitting the top of the umbrella in the foreground.

2

ColoursRock t1_j7l8r3i wrote

The perspective makes no sense. Her tears are falling from her eyes which hit her firearm, but somehow the dude standing like 80 feet away is getting rained on.

maniczed t1_j7ltoru wrote

I don't think the artist intended for this to be a realistic image...

ColoursRock t1_j7ltwb1 wrote

It doesn't have to be realistic, but when the physics makes no sense it is rather jarring.

maniczed t1_j7m1ry4 wrote

It's art not a science experiment. Salvador Dali images of melting clocks goes against the laws of physics too. Perhaps you're just in the wrong sub reddit.

AppleSlacks t1_j7nloz8 wrote

Eh, it’s art, it’s okay to critique it. A piece of art will appeal to some and not others. Honestly the first thing I saw was a giant girl with a basketball covering up her crotch. Then I realized it was an umbrella. Then I though it looked a bit like Times Square but then is she in the building. It’s just an okay gif. I have seen others on here I like a lot more but to each his own.

maniczed t1_j7oc9re wrote

I get it, the subjectiveness of art allows those critiques, but simply stating that you hate a piece of art because the physics aren't right ( previous commentor, not you) is a very limited view of art and while they are absolutely entitled to their opinions and views, i feel that utilizing such a literal mindset as a justification to why you think a work of art is shitty isn't fair to the artist and belittles the work the artist put into the piece.

The irony of my comment here is that using that same logic anyone can justify or criticize what I just said the same way I am currency trying to justify my veiw point. Art is funny like that.

Masterkid1230 t1_j7lhv7n wrote

The Japanese/Chinese also makes no sense. It was literally translated as “Tear City/Castle” and then the stop signs read “Stop Cry” but it’s all very janky.

Still a beautiful image.

LotzaMozzaParmaKarma t1_j7ljy68 wrote

Yeah, it’s art though. It isn’t apparent to me that the artist is trying to create a realistic image here - might as well say “someone should fix that flickering sign.”

I am, but not in a good way. The perspective is all over the place. The tears drop down onto the umbrella but the man in the umbrella is in front of the intersection.

The woman is behind the intersection. There is no way the tears should be falling from her face onto the umbrella.
