One good reason (one version of) the Metaverse failed is cause apparently no one seemed to realize that NOBODY is gonna spend 18 hours a day wearing a VR headset that is JUST heavy enough to possibly kink your neck and only lasts MAYBE 3 hours on a charge to live in a VIRTUAL mansion while getting ham-fisted for rent in the real world

A year ago Facebook was under incredible scrutiny for causing increased suicide in teenage girls in the US (via Instagram). Both whistleblower reports and congressional focus.
Zuckerberg, in a panic, did a rebrand and threw a ton of money at a "night before it's due" project called the Metaverse, betting that the tech media will chase that new shiny object and ignore all that bad stuff over there.
In this respect the Metaverse was 100% a success. Even the best tech reporters fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Frances Haugen's name is lost amongst the chaff, and FB properties will continue to damage individuals and society.
And in a few months when the Metaverse project gets shut down due to tightening economic concerns, we'll get a "lol we tried" when in actuality it's already a striking success.

The metaverse is all of the open world online games that are more about socializing.... Like a life simulator (Second Life, IMVU). A virtual world.
Metaverse is a metaverse that Facebook (now Meta) made. It failed because Mark Zuckerberg didn't know what he was doing in that space.

Evil idea: He should have made it an open world digital monster game but the monsters are ads you have to watch to capture and you make the ads fight each other or something.

It's just VR. The idea is that people will want to take everything they do on the internet, and do it in VR instead.
It's failing because no one likes VR.

That’s because it’s dumb and it sucks! Better graphics were on the Wii

Ever heard of Second Life? It's basically an online 3D role-playing game where you can make an avatar character and go hang out with others. Zuck wanted to make a Facebook-flavored VR version and marketed it hard to companies as the "future of customer engagement". Zuccboi just happens to have forgotten to check whether people are actually stoked about spending a thousand dollarinos for a VR kit only to spend their time in 3D Facebook Advertisement-Land. So, you know, people who would have been interested stuck to their usual haunts in SL, VRChat etc.
Of course it didn't help that when their actual software came out it had such shitty graphics that it made early 2000s games look photorealistic.
