They may have lived at home and not paid for food in the summer semester, or that might just be restaurants if a dining hall meal plan is part of their tuition or scholarship.

Additionally it seems possible that the 2 unnamed jobs might be in food service. Between leftovers and family meals, I know I've saved considerable money on groceries while working!

That seems about 2000 hours working between the four jobs? That's honestly insane together with college, most people spend just about that working their full time jobs without any college on top.

You may be able to request fee waivers based on financial need? At least for non-professional PhD programs I’ve been able to get almost all fee waivers just based on my tax returns from last year
