I also hear there's less traffic up there and rent is much much lower, but the social life sucks.
I bet there's just as many good nightclubs though!
Deep cut but true
Why is nothing open past midnight on Mars?!?
Seriously, what if you need emergency Pedialyte? I tell ya, Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids.
Some places are open 24 hours, but it's really inconvenient if you show up during the 37 minutes they're closed.
In fact, it’s cold as hell.
Ice and salt
Commute times are about the same as coming from Braintree though.
Less traffic, but the commute still sucks, and it's pretty much all tech bros up there.
It’s becoming too gentrified there
When those yuppie Greeshnaks started moving in, bringing their hot zzzzllxxy studios and artisanal free-range latte stores to the neighborhood, it’s not as gritty or coarse as it used to be. Multi family cave prices shot up all over. Real shame.
Have you even looked into the moving costs?!?!
Where do the young professionals hang out?
Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon? The food is great but there's no atmosphere.

Mars can be quite nice. It's the damn Martians though...they make us Massholes look downright civil.

So your 4 cylinder cars won’t start
I mean... The lows in Boston would be similar to the highs on Mars.
No, the highs will be similar to the highs. If you click the link you'll see that Mars' highs have been 10° F to 5° F over the last few days.
But the low is -105⁰F on Mars.
Right. Which is why I am comparing the daytime temperatures (highs) at each location. I am not talking about the lows.
I do not live in Boston. I live in the South, in Georgia. I don't even own a heavy jacket. But will be visiting my little sister in West Roxbury next weekend. Arriving Friday afternoon, leaving Sunday morning. I just have one thing to say:
What the fuck?
Layer, and keep your extremities covered - ears and fingers. If I have to be out in this for any amount of time (like while waiting on a bus) I'll do tank top > long sleeve thermal > long sleeve top shirt > fleece or windproof jacket. It's less about having a "heavy" coat as it is about keeping your core warm. Definitely have gloves and a hat. Have fun!
Yeah, it was actually in the upper 20s here yesterday morning when I was out hiking. I had on leggings and jeans, then a thin shirt and a thick sweater and a thick hoodie. That is what I plan to wear mostly. Plus, I am naturally insulated through a rigorous schedule of eating too much junk food so there's that too.
I have gloves and a scarf and my hoodie has a, well, a hood, but no boots. Alas.
I too subscribe to the "Cheetos method" of temperature regulation. Sounds like you've got a solid plan. Boots aren't hugely necessary unless there's snow on the ground, which there shouldn't be. Good socks should be fine.
Oh honey best of luck. Layers will be your friend, as will be staying inside.
I have informed my sister that we are staying inside. No trips to the zoo or park!
The next time we meet will be this summer in Florida so it will be incredibly hot, so we'll get to share both temperature extremes together.
Y'all need to plan your vacations better! Take a hint from the snowbirds, Florida in the winter and Mass in the summer!
We are doing it totally backwards. Silly school holidays!
I feel like people are way over stating 10F unless there's horrible horrible wind. That's like... a zipped up winter coat and gloves for me probably over a hoodie, I'm not even positive I would need a hat if I was walking, I tend to over heat quickly & thats what the hoodie is for. Unless you are out for hours or way under dressed (or dangerously drunk) you'll be fine walking to the corner store, to the T, a 9 min wait for the bus.
Like get a $20 pair of thermals and nice wind proof gloves & you'll be fine.
So you’re doing this. -_-
The forecast weather is a trillion times better than Georgia. Got off the plane and my glasses fogged up, sweat through my shirt before I even made it to the house. Not fit for human habitation
Bring a beanie so your ears don’t freeze off!
Same here bud, our timing is god awful. Any times before this and it would've been beautiful lol
I'd rather intense cold than a blizzard that grounds flights.
Well denver has both lol. The snow fall here makes boston look like Florida
I got a rechargeable hand warmer and put it in my jacket pocket. There’s a little pocket in the chest area that I put it in. You can find hand warmers at CVS for pretty cheap and they last a whiles
As someone else said surviving winter isnt bout grabbing the heaviest jacket you have.
Its about layering to keep yourself from sweating and adapting to the weather
Typically i wear uniqlo heat tech or under armor as a base
Then a T shirt followed by a hoodie
then depending on any precip a rain jacket or hooded jacket as the outer layer with wool socks and sneakers
People say layering and you hear “wear a sweater under your jacket”
Layering also means a layer under your shirt and a layer under your pants. Your legs are more surface area at more angles than your core. At those temperatures I usually wear long underwear under my jeans or pants and I also usually wear flannel-lined pants or jeans instead of thinner ones.
Also a hat and scarf or balaclava under your jacket hood and collar. This is all layering.
The last bit, some jackets and pants are more windproof than others. I have a Patagonia nano puffy just like everyone else in Boston for regular weather. But on days like this I’ll wear my full ski jacket shell to break the wind better
I’m from South Georgia and I moved to Boston after college about 2 years ago. People here say you get used to the cold weather. No you don’t. Layers and a heated blanket are the only things that keep me warm here.
My sister, the one more in West Roxbury, grew up in Florida. She went to college in Florida. Then she decided on Cornell, in upstate NY, for grad school.
My wife is from LA, and it took her about 4-5 winters to get used to it.
If you have been here two years you have barely experienced cold. This winter and last winter have been pretty warm.
Also could be in the 40s. See: New England weather
Finally proper winter weather
People are going to die….
This is a little over dramatic
They aren't wrong. Several unhoused will refuse to be sheltered and there's a good chance some will die from exposure, drinking too much to fight the cold, or taking too much then they don't feel the cold.
People keep their oven on for heat, CO poisoning happens. Space heater causes a fire.
Lots of ways people can lose their life from this type of cold snap.

This is the cruel world we live in. Heat waves kill, winters kill
You know that the current temperature is unseasonably warm? This time of year Boston is meant to be in the teens not 45°+ were prepared for it

More people are going to die because of how poor crops will perform this year
This is called whataboutism. Problem A is somehow not bad or notable because of problem B. It is a logical fallacy that increases the mental energy to actually initiate problem solving by lessening all problems down and constantly redirecting focus.
Given the scale of our society it should be, and is, possible to care about and solve multiple problems without putting people down over which ones they talk about or care about.
Anyone have any charities downtown that are accepting clothing donations? I've reached out to a few in the past couple weeks and they have declined clothing items.
RIAC for refugee families
They only take coats.
Quincy COPE
Check out food not bombs (fnb) I haven't worked with them since before covid but when I did we accepted pretty much anything that wasn't ratty
St. Francis House if you haven’t already checked with them
I put away my winter gear and have I've been walking around in shorts all week just to taunt Ol' Man Winter. I might break out the Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses, and flip flops today and do some yard work.
What's the addy I'll bring Pina coladas and beach chairs
On Monday, yesterday's forecast was 30 and 3" of snow. Yesterday it was 50 with no precipitation.
There is no such thing as a 10-day forecast. There are 3-day forecasts, and there are historical averages.
No, the ten day forecast is based on the model projections for where high pressure and low pressure will settle, which steers precipitation and determines temperature. It’s not like it’s a guess.
How can I use this to not go in the office 🤔
The office will be warm and cozy, heating the house will cost you your first born. I'd be more thinking how can I get some overtime so I can stay in the office longer.
I share your exact sentiment. My apartment will be 58, the office will be 72, and the Somerville library will be like 80 because they keep that place toasty.
The numbers don't lie, and they spell a week in office and at the library.
One of the main determinants for heading into the office anymore is: Will it cost me more to take the T or to heat my house for the day? I have electric heat, so it’s pretty much always the latter.
And surprise, in the summer it will be more expensive to cool your house down to commute to the office.
That'll be how they kill WFH slowly but surely.
Exactly, I worked from the office all summer because they keep that place at like 68°.
“It’s so cold my car won’t start”
If you have kids, “The kids don’t have school so I have to stay home with them” if no kids, first make up some kids.
“My front door is iced over and I can’t leave the house”
It's not too cold for a car to not start.... and why is school canceled?
Guess it'll finally be time to turn on the heat.
You may want to hold off. I think it's almost April.
What a sweet post. Thank you
It's been extremely disheartening seeing so many camped put in doorways of vacant storefronts these past few years. It feels like the humanity is being ripped out from society bit by bit. Obviously, many are too mentally ill or physically addicted for proper reintegration. But the majority are just stuck in the poverty cycle.
However, there needs to be a huge change and we need to demand and cultivate a better society.
Oh jeez. I'd better come up with some backup plan for heat
Thanks for the warning!
Perfect! I will go skiing. Hopefully the cold will drive off the crowds.
I’ll be out skiing in it!
What’s the best charity to donate clothing to that actually directly helps the people who need the clothing?

My money’s on 35 degrees and raining
…..New in town, so I need to do anything in my appt: drip faucets, etc? In the south you drip if it drops below 25.

Why TF do we live here?
Best state in the union baby just be glad you don't live in presque Isle or something if you can't handle this
Family. That is the only reason. If it weren’t for that, I would be living in Sedona Arizona
According to the European Model, Saturday morning is supposed to be below -10 F in most of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island except for places right along the coast. Northern New England and western Mass are supposed to be even colder, with widespread -20s or even -30s in Northern NH.
Fucking can't win this winter lol. Moved to Denver while they have their harshest winter in years while MA coasts in 40s and 50s. The one week I come back the true Feb weather hits. Thanks for this universe.
I was in Denver for that arctic blast or whatever. Went from 50 to -17 in like 6 hours
Yeah, that sucked. I thought living in MA my whole live prepared me for this winter. A little bit, but damn it's real winter out here
We get a cold spell like this at least a winter, it’s not that unusual.
Does anyone know if this will affect flights?
It will not be a factor.
I hate winter. Ugh. I am now officially an adult.

Luckily I'll be in Disney World 😎
Turn off your water
Run the water at a trickle
You need to be careful with that. If you go with a blunt solution by turning it off where it comes in from the street and you have a boiler you're stopping the system from getting makeup water which can damage it.
You should be using a shutoff where you can isolate pipes vulnerable to freezing (e.g. running in outside walls), but it's also important to open the fixture at the "user" end as the water can still freeze and expand which can burst the pipe still.
[deleted]
Yeah, I kinda thought the "and you have a boiler" part made that clear, but here we are.

Are you new to Boston?

FUN FACT: If this forecast holds, the daytime temperatures Boston this weekend will be roughly same as those on Mars, specifically Gale Crater where the Curiosity rover is operating.
