This weekend is the Head of the Charles, a regatta on the Charles that regularly brings in hundreds of thousands of spectators.
gnimsh t1_ita7x4c wrote
Ok but like, can I still ride my bike on the esplanade?
mini4x t1_ita9rwu wrote
Yeah just don't go past Harvard Sq or so..
JumboChimp t1_itabxne wrote
East of the BU bridge you shouldn't have problems. On the Cambridge side, Memorial Drive will be closed to cars between Western Ave and Elliot Bridge Saturday and Sunday, so you can ride there. Otherwise, expect to see a lot of pedestrians on both sides of the river between the BU and Arsenal St bridges. The heaviest crowds are usually on the Boston side between Western and Arsenal, you'll have to walk your bike through parts of that area, especially between Elliot Bridge and Arsenal.

Can confirm, I saw lots of bikers taking full advantage of the closed-down Memorial Drive. It was so inviting that I wished I could’ve joined them.
JumboChimp t1_itidsdm wrote
That stretch of Memorial is closed Sundays between April and November (and Saturdays too, at least for this year) so you can stop by another time. Some info here.
TheDancingRobot t1_itbiije wrote
On the esplanade - yes but the further down the river you go, the bike path is filled with 24 long boats and thousands and thousands of people, vendors, tents, trucks, everything.
Down near the city, along the esplanade and the mouth of the river, it's going to be a normal Saturday - but up past Harvard is chaos. In a wonderful way because Saturday is going to be absolutely gorgeous.

Well, I’m moving to Beacon Hill, so yeah. I got right out of Boston .

Hope those boats are worth it because your boy isn't getting this hull down the wet river this weekend.

While you may not be I guarantee you the rowers are.
Fucking Olympic village levels of fucking going on this weekend.
Tall lanky people hooking up in every private corner of harvard square I tell you what.

I'm going to a wedding in Cambridge at 6:00p tonight. On a scale of "Friday in August" to "College Move-In Weekend" how much extra time should I give myself?
swap_catz t1_itbovj4 wrote
You should have left yesterday
dante662 t1_itbozc2 wrote
Depends where in Cambridge.

If on memorial drive or in harvard square, you should probably already be there.
member_member5thNov t1_itbrph5 wrote
Don’t plan to drive on Storrow, Soldiers Field, or Memorial Drive. Or try to drive across the Charles or through Harvard Square. Probably heavier than usual traffic on Mass ave and the highway access areas.
It’s not move-in or graduation but it is up there with like harvard-yale or Boston Calling.
Also if you don’t have a hotel room ya fucked.
RunRideYT t1_itc74gd wrote
You should just park at Alewife and take the T / bus and your trip will be unaffected.

Where’s the best spot in Boston on the Charles east of the harvard bridge? Or should I go right west of it? I’ve been here two years and haven’t gotten to go see it, but my friend from college is rowing! I’m so excited!
FatFreeItalian t1_itbdixm wrote
If you can get a spot on a bridge it’s usually good viewing. Weeks is generally packed, and rightly so. But sitting on the shore between Weeks and Anderson works too.

Should someone drive into the city (from Worcester to Brookline) at noon tomorrow? Or is that a really dumb idea?
jimbo_was_his_name-o t1_ita2hzq wrote
Brookline will be fine. Just stay away from the Charles river in Cambridge and Allston

And don't try to go the North End either because that's where everyone will be going for dinner.

Is it better or worse than Salem in October?
member_member5thNov t1_itbiip3 wrote
Better? If you are outside of Harvard Square in Cambridge you won’t even notice it is happening unless you try to cross the Charles between the BU bridge and Watertown. Or try to go out to dinner.
Harvard graduation week is more disruptive.
Babahoyo t1_itbxps2 wrote
Not even close. Salem in October might be a top 5 most crowded city event in the US.
Commercial_Board6680 t1_itcgqor wrote
Well, I hadn't planned on taking the river, so I think I'll be just fine getting around.

Is there stuff to do around the river for people not totally invested in rowing . Venders or anything?
anemonemometer t1_itc79m6 wrote
There’s supposed to be vendors and food at riverside park and a couple other places on the route.
acunc t1_itcaoa1 wrote
Tom’s of vendors, alcohol, etc. it’s fun even if you don’t row or aren’t a rower. Just expect throngs of people everywhere and keep an eye out for boats that may take your head off
