They are completely different. I would say the Miyazaki film was loosely inspired by the book, whereas the book is heavily influenced by myths and fairy tales. I saw the movie before I read the book and love them for completely different reasons and was shocked by how the movie is nothing like the book. I'm going to reread them once I figure out which kindle account I have them on.

The book is almost nothing like the movie, more that just a few aspects were taken from it: it's not exactly an adaptation, and it shouldn't be surprising an original film can be better than a book (it's not even good to begin with). Similar with the Earthsea and Borrowers ones, except the former was generally agreed to be a mistake. I'd like there to be a better adaptation of Earthsea, none have really hit the mark so far imo.

I would like to see The Silmarillion and Kalevala as movies. Both are epic stories that would make amazing movies due to their rich and detailed worlds, complex characters, and grand themes of creation, destiny, and heroism. Maybe too difficult to make though...

The Silmarillion as a universe like Marvel. So many different fantastic stories. Fëanor alone would be a fantastic film.

That would be a thing! I believe that if done right, it could be an amazing addition to the cinematic universe. Feanor, in particular, is a character that could be explored in depth, given his complex motivations and tragic fate. Would be also cool to see Fingolfin battling Morgoth, I have always tried to imagine the look of the scene.

There are so many books that I wish were movies, but not a lot of movies I wish were books. I was thinking earlier bored at work, JR by William Gaddis would make a fantastic film if one could condense 770 pages of dialogue into a 2.5 hour flick.

I love both Howl's Moving Castles, the movie and the book, but I do love the book better. Lately, I've been thinking about the book, Gunnar's Daughter by Sigrid Undset. I think it would make a fantastic movie, or even a limited series might be better.

There are loads of movies that are as good as most books you will find, and I usually like them because they are like movies and not books. I usually sour on a movie pretty quickly if the only thing to recommend to it is it’s dialogue.

I wish Deadhouse Gates (from Malazan) was a movie. Mainly the Chain of Dogs storyline would be peak cinema.
And I wish Dark Crystal franchise and HBOs The Wire was novelised.

I would have loved to see John Varley's Titan trilogy of books adapted to the screen with Sigourney Weaver playing Cirrocco Jones.
Maybe Joel Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series.
I think that both are too ambitious for today's filmmakers that just reboot new crap out of old crap.

I'd love to read Last Epoch's story in a book. I think it could make a good story. Especially the part we don't have yet.

The last of us (games), Horizon zero dawn, and Final Fantasy VIII are all games that I would love to be able to have in book format.
The Nevernight, Babel, The Poppy War, This is how you lose the time war, are book I would love to see on screen, possibles as movies or movies series.
Warrior Nun, Good Girls, and A League of their own are the first 3 cancelled shows that come to mind and I would like to be able to read as books so I can read how the hell they were supposed to end.
