We're staying near The Walter's Art Museum in June and we seem to be within walking distance of places we want to visit. How pedestrian friendly is this area? Or would one suggest ubering instead?

One of the most walkable neighborhoods in Baltimore. People are friendly, just make eye contact and say Hi.
What are your concerns?
What are your destinations?
This is our first visit to Baltimore so we're totally unfamiliar with the area. Only concern was that is wasn't pedestrian friendly. Our kid just got into Hopkins so we'll be looking at housing but we'd also like to see Inner Harbor and the surrounding museums and catch a baseball game. Thanks for your input!
Congratulations on the admission to Hopkins!
If it's for undergraduate, there's plenty of on campus housing and the neighborhood there is very walkable as well.
If your kid is at Peabody, they'll be living in Mount Vernon.
Mount Vernon is central for walking, public transportation, and biking. The Inner Harbor isn't what it used to be, but it's a nice walk from Rash Field to Fells Point. You can also take the commuter boats across the harbor. Check out the American Visionary Arts Museum. Have a wonderful visit!
Awesome! Thanks for the tips!
There’s a free bus (Charm City Circulator) and multiple very cheap ones (BaltimoreLink buses) going north-south on Charles and St. Paul that will get you to the Inner Harbor area
The immediate area of Mt Vernon is very pedestrian friendly and you _can _ walk to the Inner Harbor, but is you don’t feel like covering that distance the buses are very convenient
Also the Hopkins buses stop at the Washington Monument and I've never been IDed getting on one
Yep!
The free bus (the purple line of the Charm City Circulator [CCC]) that goes from Mt. Vernon to downtown picks up at the Washington Monument (Charles and Monument St.—as does the JHU shuttle, which you can just hop on if it comes first). Southbound CCC picks up at St. Paul and Madison or St. Paul and Centre. So you can easily hop on and save some steps either way if you want. The Circulator runs approximately every 15-20 minutes (supposedly), though it does not run late at night.
Inner harbor is easily walkable and we walk to baseball games from the neighborhood all the time! Definitely a good spot for what you’re looking to do
When I lived up there, I walked EVERYWHERE
Very. And you get a lot of nice buildings to look at. Do keep in mind the city is hilly. While walking to the harbor, is downhill, but coming back you may want to take the light rail.
Or the Circulator bus which is free.
Aka the Charm City Circulator Purple Route. The northbound stop is at Pratt and Calvert.
I live here. We walk everywhere! And we regularly walk to Camden Yards, which is the best! It takes about 20 minutes to walk from where you will be staying to the ballpark.
As someone else said, no one thinks of Baltimore as hilly, but it really is!
After dark just be conscious of your surroundings. Other than that I’d echo everything in this thread.
The most walkable
Incredibly walkable. My walks are usually from the Inner Harbor (near the Maryland Science Center) all the way to the University of Baltimore.
Takes around 1-2 hours to explore (if walking the straight shot) and there’s little side streets all along the way that’ll get you to restaurants and cafes.
It might get a little hectic (eg. wider roads, more traffic) once you’re near Penn Station, but still doable.
I walk everywhere from mt Vernon, depending on what you want to do it’s very walkable and it’s also easy to hop on the light rail or the circulator/bus if the place you want to go is further away
Very walkable.
Extremely walkable. Free circulator buses running up Charles and down St. Paul (offering access to Charles Village, Station North, Downtown, and Fed Hill). Unless you're seriously in a pinch you can either walk or take transit to where you're going. City buses also are nice and plentiful and are just $2 for 90-mins of use when you use the CharmPass app.
Yeah you picked probably the best area for walkability. Also, the light rail, Amtrak, subway, bike lanes all accessible from Mt Vernon. You can even take the light rail from BWI into Mt Vernon if you’re flying in. No need to rent a car or even catch an Uber for that.
It's pretty walkable. Charles St (the street Hopkins is on) runs right through it so you can comfortably walk ~3miles north and be on Homewood if Peabody is where they'll be going then that's central Mt. Vernon. Baltimore is a geographically small city and considering ~70% of it is places you nor your kid should ever go, you can easily walk to everywhere there's stuff to do from Mt. Vernon
I lived in Mt. Vernon for 11 years without a car, mostly before Uber etc. existed. It's profoundly walkable.
If you walk downtown along Charles, stop into Mick O'Sheas for a pre-game drink/snack!
ETA: You'll also find plenty of scooters, e-bikes, and a N/S free bus route.
mt vernon is a lovely place to stay... if i didn't love my spot in hampden, i would def live in mt vernon. and there's lots of great restaurants around! the peabody library is beautiful, too, and just around the corner from walters.
that will be a beautiful time of year, too! hope you have fun!

Don’t walk too far west. Or East. Or north
North is fine, up to The train station and the Charles Theater
