The most uplifting news from my POV: power from renewables is now less expensive to produce than power from coal in some parts of the world. So much so that perfectly good coal-fired power plants are being decommissioned because they can't compete with modern renewables. And the technological genie which enables these renewables cannot be put back in the bottle.
As the saying goes, people didn't stop riding horses because they ran out of horses; they stopped because cars were superior. You're seeing the same thing happen with renewables now. It's wonderful.
random_shitter t1_j5t7olv wrote
Slight but important correction: building and operating new renewables is in more and more places cheaper than operating an existing fossil fuel plant. Building new fossil fuel plants is not done any more from an economic perspective but for reliability reasons.

I'm skeptical of the record lows. How much fossil fuel did Australia use in the summer of 1642?

So why is my bill at an all time high?
exterminans666 t1_j5sylpl wrote
Because inflation and mostly just corporate greed.
Renewables will be a bit more expensive though. We will need systems to balance power demand and stronger power grids. But this is offset by cheaper renewables.

Renewables bad... let's go all in on these limited resources instead.

This is not surprising. The transition is well underway. We're going to get a lot of headlines like this in the coming years.

so why is my electricity per kW higher than its ever been?

Because you pay for the renewables and the fossil plants that sit idle.

Wow that's still a lot of coal. Australia has one of the highest per capita co2 emissions. I am surprised how low the roof top solar contributes. It's everywhere. For those wondering why one of the largest uranium suppliers don't have nuclear in the mix it's because Australia said no to that in the 90s.

Germany just dropped $180 billion on renewables. They also already produce 45% of their power from renewables, about twice what the USA does.
