Unless the stalker has plans to do something more than just stalk. Than it would have been better if it were caught/seen.

No because once they do something more than stalk then it's worse for everyone

Seems like maybe it’s best for everyone if they are caught before they do something more than stalking.

I think he’s saying it’s almost like a tree falling in the woods. If you have a stalker that just continually stalks, but never even enters your consciousness (it definitely is creepy because the stalker knows while you don’t), but you, the object of the stalking are left blissfully oblivious

Lol thank you for literally being the only person that understands this

Invonnative t1_ity23rc wrote

More like “if” they do something, though that is perhaps a pretty likely if in the case of stalkers.

Idk if English is your second language but your "Than" should be "Then". I don't normally correct people like this but it seems like you were attempting to use it correctly and may want to know.

Then is for an event, like leading into something Then something else.

If you planned to use "than" comparatively, it should always be around the middle of the sentence and after a word like "rather" or "better" ... i.e.

Them getting caught is better than if they weren't

This comes off as a very lengthy, condescending, unnecessary, passive aggressive remark.

Due_Avocado_788 OP t1_itywhex wrote

I checked to make sure in his post history that he posted in another language as well before commenting. It's unfortunate he got offended, but usually people want to know if they're messing up in their second language, especially English.

You can even tell he didn't know which "than" I was talking about in his next reply, until sometime explained it to him. Both times played off as "I'm tired" ... it's okay, he didn't like it, that's fine

It came off as informative too me

Btw, it’s to* …not “too”

Lol thanks. Saying btw seemed more condescending than the other other commenters paragraphs stating that he was trying to be informative and not rude.

Thank you for taking the time to explain! I actually know how to use both of these terms, it's just that I am actually very tired and didn't notice misusing the second one. Even after you pointed it out, I still didn't notice the second "than" and tried to explain how my first one is correct. I am not sure if it was autocorrect or I misspelled it manually without thinking. I apologize, and thank you once again for pointing it out!

Also, as another side note, I believe that using a comma after the word "but" would be more grammatically correct, as there you begin another sentence. Hope this helps!

Will go to sleep now! Good knight!

Due_Avocado_788 OP t1_ityw9bc wrote

While you're right the general rule is that commas should be where pauses are, it's not always the case :)

Sorry to upset you, I saw you posting in a Spanish speaking country so thought you'd want to know. Clearly not :)

Well, that's what I remembered from the english classes at school. I went to local english competitions and always scored among the top 3 (except one time in which for some reason I scored incredibly low) .

Also, I am not a spanish speaker, you might have confused romanian with it.

And you didn't really upset me in any way. I saw this as an exchange of opinions and knowledge. Nothing to get upset about.

In your comment the first instance of 'than' is correct usage, the second instance of it seems like a simple typo ('then' would have been correct).

Oh, that's right! I am very tired and I didn't notice. I am very sorry! It's 4 am here and I am still awake.

No worries, it was weird that OP called it out in the first place when it was clearly a simple typo.

2

Due_Avocado_788 OP t1_ityw3th wrote

Not a typo, dude is from Madrid and used it wrong. You can tell he wanted to use it comparatively. Oh well don't care

GrandNibbles t1_itxnjzc wrote

are you a stalker by any chance? no one believes this. stalkers should be caught and discouraged in every way from predatory behavior

11

Invonnative t1_ity2d48 wrote

Eh I kinda believe this, for the same reason I don’t ask my partner who they think of when they masturbate. There are some questions you don’t want the answer to, and if there’s no harm then there’s no foul in my book. Watcher may have been a better term here, though, for connotation sake

GrandNibbles t1_ityxxic wrote

"stalker" is inherently non-consensual watching with some kind of personal investment. it's an invasion of privacy at best, but can become worse if unchecked

2

Due_Avocado_788 OP t1_itywqjj wrote

You guys aren't getting it lmao. Once they engage in predatory behavior they've been seen/ caught. Not caught as in arrested, caught as in found out

You know the only difference between a stalker and a rapist is commitment.
