Just recently moved to RI for work, and have been a life long surfer. I was wondering what the state and status of Surf life around here and any surf clubs hot spots, places to hang out?

Narragansett Beach, I know some surfers like spots off the Cliff Walk in Newport, Second Beach. Misquamicut in places.

Warm winds and Narragansett surf n skate are good shops. Narragansett town beach usually has decent surf and the beach isn’t horribly rocky. I say start there. You’ll meet plenty of people. A 4/3 suit and a 5/4 are good to have, especially if you plan to surf in winter. Plus hood, gloves, booties. Trunks in summer and a 3/2 suit early spring end of summer. New England is one of those places you basically need all the suits.

Warm winds was my destination. That's awesome thank you. Yeah I have my summer suit with me now and need to restock a my gear. So thank you for the breakdown

If you’ve already got a 3/2 and plan to surf in the winter I’d focus my money on getting a quality 5/4. The thicker the rubber the nicer it is to have the high end stretchy stuff.

You can make a 3/2 work with accessories until it’s time to go 5/4. A 4/3 is nice, but it’s not a necessity IMO.

Does the water get to the temp warranted in the cold months?

AleutianMegaThrust t1_ivmhjzx wrote

Elaborate? Water gets to the low 30s mid-late January depending on the winter we are having

Matunuck Surf Shop will easily get you connected to the local crowd. Really great staff. There are a lot of lifelong surfers that wander in and out of that place.

6

AleutianMegaThrust t1_ivmhlqr wrote

Matunuck surfers are generally assholes.

_CaesarAugustus_ t1_ivmi5zz wrote

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that since you went out of your way to say this it probably says more about you.

AleutianMegaThrust t1_ivmidcr wrote

If you asked a matunuck surfer no one ever goes out of their way except to surf at their beach man lol

1

_CaesarAugustus_ t1_ivmisil wrote

Man, you’re still here. Shit-talking people. On the internet. To someone that clearly doesn’t agree with you. Can confirm: It says more about you. Keep that negativity to yourself.

AleutianMegaThrust t1_ivmixd7 wrote

You funny. Angry. I bet you slash ct drivers tires at the beach lol

Thank you for adding "keep that negativity to your self' after your original post.

_CaesarAugustus_ t1_ivmkpwo wrote

You’re still going. You’re still being a knob. The only one making generalized statements about people is you. The only one disrespecting people you hardly know is you. Who even said anything about CT drivers? You. It’s like you’re projecting.

Looking through your comments I don't see you being a troll so I'm confused.

The fact is I've made generalized statements about people and I agree. Do you want to learn about the experiences behind them?

The many times during college after growing up in pawtucket where in high school I was taking the bus down to Newport walk to pick up my board and walking what felt like a thousand miles to 1st beach to get better. Working at (sorry it was elemental at the time) which again meant walking from downtown Newport. The culture there was great. I surfed the avenues the KS the beach breaks pj, ruggles, tuckermans etc etc etc. In the 10+ years in newport and gansett I've only had two issues with other people surfing once was at gansett the other was at Monehans.

Then finally getting a car living near Scarborough going to URI surfing evrything was great but going to matunuck to get threatened, snaked, etc when I was 20 often by people my age but also older than me.

I have NEVER had a pleasant experience surfing in matunuck as people don't take turns everyone wants every wave cool not for everyone. Shit surfing in Hawaii as a haole I got more respect.

I've surfed with Peter pan and that old man was aggressive but he still gave up perfect waves to people in different areas of gansett because he had respect and was not an asshole.

So based on my many experience which could totally have to do with me.

For the hundreds of times I've surfed the only place I've consistently had to battle the whole "local" thing was Matunuck.

Sid sat down with an interview with me even though I was a city kid for a project about the clifwalk in college. He gave me wax when I was slipping on my rails trying to get to 10.

Newport and Gansett surf culture are much more inclusive.

Alright I'll give them a shot. The rest of my week is dedicated to getting up so anything is helpful

Waterbrothers! Talk to Sid. He’s a local legend. There is a good spot at the end of ruggles ave. It’s rock break, but in the winter the waves are more consistent. Some days are really good out there.

I'll give it a stop say hi. I'd love to meet an old timer local

Water Brothers was forced to close from the building being sold... He is doing local pop ups for right now

2

insearchofthingz t1_ivqij2h wrote

He built the original shop in his backyard, I’m pretty sure you can just pop your head in there hahaha. But yup, 100% correct.

Does Sid still have the daily surf reports you can call into?

aly-moon t1_ivmpaxb wrote

401-999-WAVE as far as I know it is still active daily

AleutianMegaThrust t1_ivmppug wrote

Awesome. There was a substitute teach in high-school that whenever he came in we would use his Motorola razr to call it and listen

aly-moon t1_ivmryn7 wrote

I totally grew up on sids reports. Since I was like 13. Most of my life have been hanging on them haha. I was so crushed when water bros got screwed over. I work on the island frequently and it was great having him right there. Such a genuine good soul dude

aly-moon t1_ivmpfgh wrote

If that one isn't working there is also 401-848-WAVE

There is a surfing culture for sure depending on where you live specifically - South Shore Beach in Little Compton is a popular surfing spot.

https://www.swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/newport-rhode-island. Pretty much any spot in RI (S swell, N winds late Sat, early Sun). The spot depends on how good you are. Goosewing (south shore beach), Point Judith in Narragansett, Ruggles (off of the Breakers in Newport) are reef/point breaks that will be firing if you can hang there. Ruggles is mostly advanced surfers and locals. If beach breaks are more your thing, try second beach in Middletown. First (Easton’s) and second are close together, so you can drive by and check both if you’re in the Newport area.

I used to do a lot of surfing in RI and MA.

TwinFinTriggerFish OP t1_ivkbbek wrote

Nice nice. I'd say I'm no pro but I don't drag either. A good solid 6-7/10 if ten was a pro star and one a starting grom.

Do yer research mate, fall into winter is the best bet. All you need is a 3/2 and a 5 Mil+booties/mitts, don't need a 4/3 we are about into 5 mill season. Parking and access aren't difficult during the "off season" aka fall>winter when we actually get waves, yet access is tight during the "peak" summer season- gets flat.

CT (sometimes MA) Kooks will paddle battle you on everything and clog the lineups- things get hectic during peak hurricane swells but we don't have a mess like the west coast (yet that is)

Beach Breaks on the sandy beaches, or rocky Point breaks which you will have to learn/findPt. Jude is a staple, Narragansett down to Westerly, Newport and the islands fire but I don't surf the island.

Keep in mind many spots have room for 2-3 vehicles but our battle for reclaiming public right of ways has opened much up in terms of access.

Head down into any surf shops board room and shoot the shit. Welcome

Narragansett and Matunuck have vibrant surf communities. Go to deep hole in the morning and introduce yourself.

TwinFinTriggerFish OP t1_ivkre56 wrote

Deep hole. Where exactly is that.

Responsible-Rate-202 t1_ivmhb3l wrote

It is all the way down in Matunuck. You get off the exit on RT 1 and drive straight all the way down Matunuck Beach Rd and you’ll see the entrance on your right.
