What makes you think I needed to have this explained to me?

We are both saying the same thing. There are 2 systems of justice: Crimes that can only be committed by privileged people are politely handled in one system. Another system of violence, profiling, intimidation and so called street justice applies to other kinds of people.

Media (with your assistance here on reddit) stir up outrage over crimes committed by poor people in disproportion to the harm inflicted by privileged wrongdoers.

We only differ in that you seem to think this is fine while I do not.

abovaveragefox t1_j7kij3z wrote

Is there no value in protecting business owners from getting robbed? Or trying to stop people from committing the crimes? Stealing sunglasses is just an unnecessary insult to society. You can buy them anywhere for 5 bucks, it's not like they were doing robin hood shit and donating them to the less fortunate. People commit crimes, but other people that aren't poor commit crimes so don't try to enforce laws on them unless you get these other "privileged" groups is the worst thought process. All of them are bad, no need to knock any process that brings criminals to justice.

Police need to exist but discriminatory ideologies like the war on drugs which was entirely built on racial and socio economic discrimination does not. Police might have a little more respect in society if a majority of their funding wasn’t to harass people who sell drugs to consenting adults. It’s ridiculous that people selling drugs to consenting adults get threatened with decades of prison time meanwhile when Jeffery Epstein raped children he served 14 months with 72 hours weekly work release. Defund the police is the wrong slogan but ending the illegal unconstitutional prohibition of mind altering substances would effectively defund the police. Meanwhile more people die as a result of consuming alcohol and tobacco every year than do of all illegal drugs combined. But you conservatives are just too stupid to understand logic.

Companies who’s products are made for pennys by paying children and other exploited people in countries where they have no labor rights and then go and pay laborers in America wages that don’t afford them to have a life worth living they deserve no sympathy. They shouldn’t be allowed to run their buisiness model only exists because they can legally get away with stepping on people. These companies don’t deserve the right to make profits when the cost for their products is kept artificially low by stepping on weak human beings who have no means to fight their own exploitation. And the prices they sell these products for is just disgusting. As soon as those sunglasses walk out the door they loose more than half their value and then they’ll end up in a landfill less then 6 months after they’ve been purchased. But go ahead and defend the indefensible.

I personally enjoy research and trust my own work over anything I read on reddit, and thought that the person I was responding to might be the type to reject anything anyone else says too based on their combative comments.

But here's the short version: Luxottica is basically a vertically-integrated monopoly. It's not as simple as "Think Sunglass Hut is too expensive? Don't buy it, go to a different store" because Luxottica owns that store too. Okay fine, skip the stores and just get some mall kiosk glasses. Wait no, Luxottica owns that too. Okay well then at least I'll make sure I'm getting high quality expensive glasses direct from the Ray-Ban store. Oops! Luxottica owns them too. Fine, I'll go to Ray-Ban's competition. No, Oakley is owned by them too. Okay well at least I can trust my independent optician to sell quality goods. Oh sorry, no they only sell Luxottica brands and get kickbacks for selling them too. Okay I give up, I'm just going to get glasses at Walmart. Except Luxottica owns that Foster Grant brand too. How about Walmart's competition then? Nope, Luxottica directly own Target Optical.

Beyond that, those seemingly all-encompassing first-party retail brands are only 60% of their business. The other 40% is wholesale glasses and components to other brands, so even your non-Luxottica glasses could be Luxottica.

I don't think a typical person could name a store that doesn't sell Luxottica glasses.
