Not long enough, usually its at least a couple of weeks of freezing conditions. If you want a more precise figure, the Canadians are pretty dialed in about these things.

We’ve tried a pond near Narragansett boat club today. The water level is about 2-3 feet. The ice near the road (10 feet) was sick enough to carry an adult weight but the middle part was less promising. Besides, we could see movement of underwater plants. My last hope is Sunday morning. Canadians suggest ~4 days for a shallow pond with 15F on average.

Places I saw today didn’t freeze smoothly, either. We didn’t get cold enough temps for long enough, but I also wouldn’t skate on such bumpy/wavy ice, unfortunately.

It’s been too warm before this cold spell. Stop by the local fire station before you attempt to skate on a pond you think is frozen.
