Seconding this as a Lehigh Valley native. There's a lot to see and do in the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton area, and it's a lovely region.

I grew up there too, from the early 1970s through the early 2000s north of Fogelsville and I agree with you. Fascinating area with a lot of great industrial history.

However, I'd urge OP to go see the region before developers finish covering it all over with warehousing with the full approval of economic development guys and naive township supervisors who can't figure out when enough is enough.

My best bet would be to take the bus to Allentown. I want to visit New Hope too but I guess driving is the option that makes the most sense

I mean Amtrak stops at 30th street station and you can get most places in Philadelphia by regional rail or subway from 30th street

Amtrak to Lancaster via Philadelphia. Nice small downtown area with a weekend market and plenty of restaurants/bars. Or you could even continue onto Harrisburg to see the state capitol complex, walk along the river, and go out to eat/drink. If you don’t venture out of either city, you could get by walking

New Hope is a nice place for a day visit. It's a short walk across the bridge from Lambertville NJ and I believe there's public transit there.

Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, Reading; Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (bus only; has its own regional bus system too, so it can spread out a little bit)

Ardmore; Paoli; Exton (suburban Philly first three); Lancaster, Elizabethtown, Middletown, Harrisburg (all by Amtrak; think all are accessible by bus as well through Greyhound and either SEPTA, CAT, or Red Rose)

I know you said New Hope, but there isn't anything closeby other than the SEPTA regional route in Doylestown or the bus there or at Newtown.

In New Jersey with NJ Transit, the closest I see is in Pennington or near NJ 29 & I-295 area. With the latter option, you could just about bicycle there from the river as both sides have a canal towpath on each side and New Hope/Lambertville are just over 10 miles away, one-way.
