If I recall correctly some of that land near the train station is actually toxic and it’s own by a private company so there really not much that can be done about it

Wow I didn’t know that. Given the location, I’m surprised they are not cleaning it up.

Next week when I’m in the office, I’ll take a picture of the sign…and maybe if we get enough people to call cbs corp could finally clean it up

Awesome thank you.

Cool perspective! Thanks for sharing
FBI building and the lot next to it desperately crying out for development.
Wonder if they sleuth the subreddit....
Hey FBI, maybe F off to East Hanover or something and allow that key plot to be appropriately developed and add something to the city, instead of being wasted as your personal riverside fortress

From here I can’t tell if Newark is big or small, I can literally seeing the ending of the west and south wards. Honestly this pic is super fire

Newark is quite small especially by American city standards. We have the population of Pittsburgh ~300k but only about half the land that Pittsburgh does (24 square miles for Newark while Pittsburgh is almost 50 miles total).

If the airport was outside the city limits instead of in like the majority of American cities we would have more room for people
sutisuc t1_j8evs0l wrote
Yup that’s the other thing. That 24 square miles includes a lot of airport and port land that isn’t useable for the general population so the city is really even smaller than that. Maybe like 18-20 miles of usable space.

Can’t believe we’re the largest city, must be by population
sutisuc t1_j8ew9ek wrote
Yeah by population but land area we’re smaller than a lot of towns. The largest “city” by land area is Vineland in south jersey but it’s a city in name only and would appear rural to most people
Kalebxtentacion t1_j8ewo0b wrote
Man if I could go back town and redraw Newark borders man this city would be large. Probably keep downtown in the east near the river and have every major road head towards it. Have the most western part of Newark look more green and hilly, the type of area were dears are eating grass in your yard
sutisuc t1_j8ewxca wrote
Yeah Newark would be a top 20-30 city if we included a good chunk of the immediate suburbs of Essex county like Montclair, the oranges, millburn, etc
Kalebxtentacion t1_j8ex2kr wrote
All we can do is dream, but hey atleast we can still have a good population, just going to have to build up
sutisuc t1_j8ex61g wrote
Yeah the future for Newark is bright and it will improve but it’s definitely limited in a lot of ways given how tiny it is.

Nice pic! Shows how much land near Broad Street Station remains vacant or underutilized.
