Calm Dogs Mix.

Dogs Calming Mix.

Dogs Pet Calming Mix.

I must have searched once for music to help my dog figure fireworks out, and now I am gifted with this kind of variety. (Dogs Classic Classical Mix, Dogs Classical Dinner Mix, Relaxing Dogs Mix, Dogs Calming Instrumental Mix, Soothing Dogs Mix, Dogs Guided Meditation Mix,...)

If you scroll slow enough, the page just keeps loading, so I don't think there is an end to the algorithm attempting to satisfy your every need... nor my dog's obviously very stressful life.

harglblarg t1_iu15rbp wrote

I leave soft classical music on for the dog when we're out which really skews my recommendations.

Billy_Does_Things t1_iu0z32r wrote

Whaaaat, thanks!!

Idk why this isnt on their front page of their App/Website.

40

blissfulthrowaway t1_iu12axi wrote

Possibly because these non-curated, algorithm/thesaurus hit-list mixes aren't particularly good? It would train people to ignore them outright.

I've noticed the design of these auto mixes a couple months ago. They'll turn up in certain searches now a little more persistently.

30

Billy_Does_Things t1_iu14040 wrote

Idk, mine are pretty decent for my tastes, but I do use Spotify a lot so it might help if you have a bigger sample to pull from.

19

heroinsteve t1_iu1n0va wrote

Mine can be super random. Listen to a song 100 times and it won't pop up on any related mixes. My son listens to 13 different versions of the lego ninjago themesong once and I got 5 playlist mixes for the damn thing.

6

darkeststar t1_iu3jshq wrote

Mine are almost always an ouroboros, as Spotify just seems to take whatever playlists I already listen to and then sort them into common-denominator auto mixes, using the exact songs from those playlists.

4

WildExpressions t1_iu4bur5 wrote

The mixes are good for what the name of it is. What does goblin mix even mean? But listen to the goblin mix and you will be like hmm yup this is a goblin mix.

1

HailToTheThief225 t1_iu178ef wrote

Unrelated but is anyone else's front page on the app now just a long list? It's really unintuitive yet I can't find other people complaining about it. Also seems like my daily mixes have completely reset and have nothing to do with my listening habits

13

fanklok t1_iu19zbw wrote

Yes, what the fuck is up with that. I can't even find my daily mixes anymore.

7

Maybe with a complete list of the meta tags and the functional combinations we can map out all the weird auto-generated mixes.

7

Yeah, for sure. I've been manually cultivating a Halloween playlist for a few years now, and it's surprising how many obscure songs I've found that are turning up on these auto-gen playlists.

3

Hooie t1_iu1rbpr wrote

Would you share your Halloween playlist, if you don’t mind?

2

ThePhyrrus t1_iu21zzf wrote

Of course, here's the list.

For a lot of folks, its gonna be a list to pick an choose out of, as its a huge mix of everything reasonably Halloween, so it bounces around a lot in style and tone.

(a little background on the reasoning of what's in there.)

First, the primary thing, what gets it on the list;

  • It's explicitly about Halloween, ghosts, demons, ect
  • Its spooky / haunting or closely associated with things that are (ie, some movie soundtrack pop songs)
  • mentions ghosts/ demons as metaphor, but is also spooky. (things that are metaphorical but lack the appropriate sound generally don't make the cut)

And some caveats;

  • some things get a pass on the 3rd point above, as it has been a struggle to find modern music (<10yrs) that qualifies. I've been trying to keep it from becoming a typical '80's music list' like you usually see on a Halloween list.
  • Generally, I try to include a few items from any given artist. Because otherwise it would become dominated by certain artists (ie, Lordi)
  • For the sake of not being boring, certain versions of songs you might expect are intentionally excluded from the list. No BBP Monster Mash for example, there's a cover instead. (some get a pass here, like Thriller and Ghostbusters). Also, some are covers because I'm based in Canada, and our Spotify doesn't have the license for the song here (ie, OG Buffy Theme)
  • Naturally, its dominated by Punk, Emo, Goth, Metal and soundtracks. I try to expand beyond that, but of course other genres tend away from this sort of thing.
  • and finally, its like a 6 or 7 year work in progress, which I haven't given an edit pass yet this year, so of course I'm open to input

And finally, I'm open to thoughts and suggestions. (following the guidelines above)

Tennessee Pirate Mix sounded ridiculous so I opened it.

I'd already favorited two (Big Iron -Marty Robbins and Sangria Wine -Jerry Jeff Walker) of the first 5 songs then added the 5th song (Old Man -Beck).

It's a bit heavy on Jimmy Buffett which makes sense, though I don't really like his music for some reason.

My only general description of the list would be the intersection/neighborhood of light southern rock, bluegrass, and folk, I guess.
