What monster made this

Apple’s hardware design team — I guess they were holding a grudge from giving in on an inverted-T for the arrows instead of full-height left and right (which looks better, but is harder to use in practice).

You sure this is real? It looks like a Photoshopped old Apple aluminum keyboard.

No it’s real! This layout is used on the keyboards for the 11″ and smaller iPads.

The UK version is a bit more logical: https://store.storeimages.cdn-apple.com/4668/as-images.apple.com/is/MQDP3B?wid=2000&hei=2000

I am speechless. Their previous version (for the 2018 iPad Pro 10.5”) wasn’t doing stupid things like that.

I think that even though the screen got larger, the decrease in bezel size meant that the overall width available for the keyboard was smaller.

Right. The difference between the two models is that TouchID got replaced by FaceID so they indeed lost about 1U from the keyboard width.

They probably should have made all three keys ⅔U, or made Backslash the 1U key rather than this abomination!

As you can imagine - the German/ISO version is even worse.
