i guess thats not a complete surprise considering keyboards and crypto stuff potentially have a common audience in "tech people" but that sure sucks regardless

Custom keeb is pretty strong on FOMO cuz the limited nature of GBs, which is kinda what drives NFTs, but I feel like most keeb people won't give a shit cuz you can't type on a NFT keeb or put your fancy hand-lubed hifi switches on it, except maybe for some fast fashion dudes who buy and trade keebs as they would with limited shoes/clothes, etc etc.

Why does it suck? NFTs aren't as valuable as people make them out to be but the whole thing has a great tool/value to artists.

−88

Charlotttes t1_iu36rre wrote

im speaking as an artist here: absolutely not. there's nothing that NFTs and/or crypto broadly can do for art ecosystems that can't already be done with traditional systems. add onto that:

  • they look like that
  • the fact that buyers aren't buying the art, they're buying the asset that happens to be bundled to the art
  • the fact that the token is merely a link to the image, hosted elsewhere, which means that the image tied to the token can be changed or disappear
  • every little transaction costs money, to the point that if you're small time you probably won't break even after gas costs (that's what they're called, right)
  • the ability for future buyers of the token to sidestep the residuals, which is one of the things that this system is advertised as giving you
  • this is obvious but theres also the absurd environmental cost of transactions
  • and then there's their insanely bad reputation, which is fucking poison to your personal brand

and there are definitely additional, more minute problems. its just not worth the trouble when paypal, patreon, ko-fi, and whatever else work well enough, and they work with real money

nukkawut t1_iu4uulf wrote

So many things you said are true about non-NFT art too.

−7

Charlotttes t1_iu4zogm wrote

I guess? half of the stuff i mentioned is the supposed benefits of ‘buying in’ to the system not working as advertised, and another half (NOT the other half, overlaps a bit with the first half) is a result of NFTs being an attempt to bring the dynamic of buying and selling fine art to a completely digital space. which, to be clear, isn’t the kind of thing that anyone thought was missing from ‘the experience’. its a dynamic that people are pretty happy to be free of

This may have made sense 1-2 years ago. Not that NFTs weren't bullshit back then, people just hadn't realised it yet. Now it's just extremely embarrasing.

Huffer13 t1_iu3wgbd wrote

Nfts never made sense at all. All fake money, all based on other people's speculation of what constitutes "value" never actually based on the real world of economic scarcity and usefulness.

Everyone was saying the same thing about cosmetic/collectable items when they made their appearance in online games, but they seem to be still kicking around. Digital scarcity is a real thing, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

−9

Huffer13 t1_iu4fj7r wrote

Digital scarcity only matters within the context of the wider community. A limited edition digital charm or cosmetic pack means nothing if your electrical grid or water supply goes out.

Also, that digital token means nothing to anyone who doesn't care about that context. Ever tried describing why an $600 keyboard is better than a $100 barebones kit? The non community people won't get it and won't care if it doesn't affect them.

7

meowffins t1_iu4uzkq wrote

Doesn't mean it's not shit. I won't spend a cent on games using steam marketplace for example.

Terrible user experience. Remember when the game was about the game?

I'm not against cosmetics, I consider that part of the game if it's designed to be in the game. But these big companies only have their sights on how to extract the maximum amount of currency from their userbase. Sometimes this means targeting whales at the expense of everyone else. Or introducing gambling mechanics as the primary method of obtaining anything (such as crates).

No this shit isn't going anywhere. But it's still shit. As an individual, the best I can do is not participate.

Actually no. The technology is the hardware and infrastructure that is used to store the software or digital asset. The software could be described as the techniques to write a letter, whereas the value is in the infrastructure that holds the content or the NFT. An NFT is worthless if you do not have the technology that can display it or store it.

RelativeChance t1_iu5bwch wrote

Yeah, the SEQ2 has been in production for over a year I think it's crazy and its an obvious sign that there are huge problems at Rama works. They are not able to fulfill the same boards that they fulfilled before, they must have lost their manufacturer

7

VAWLTGHOST t1_iu4jciw wrote

A handful of people have mentioned Rama going downhill. What's the story behind that? Since I'm relatively new to the hobby I'm not familiar with their history.

11

BRS_Ignition t1_iu4o6x3 wrote

The guy behind RAMA works used to be both a business partner and romantic partner with Katie, the woman who is now behind HIBI.

He's always essentially been more into the flash and marketing of the products RAMA makes than actually creating things on any kind of reasonable timeline, so between all the useless side projects, endless delays, and bragging about being rich on Instagram, things broke down and both Wilba (who designed the PCBs) and Katie (Who did a lot of the board design, I believe?) split off to make HIBI.

There's likely a lot more behind the scenes that went on, but RAMA is essentially a shell of whatever it used to be, and generally isn't super respected in the MK community because of it.

BTW, HIBI has a new board in the works called the Hibiki 65.

VAWLTGHOST t1_iu4qpus wrote

RelativeChance t1_iu32arl wrote

Where do you see this?

1

wolfenstein734 OP t1_iu38qc2 wrote

https://ramaworks.store/collections/kara/

It’s at the bottom of the page. When you click on the product listing, it prompts you for a password so I assume this isn’t supposed to be on the website.

1

RelativeChance t1_iu39sk7 wrote

Check out what I found, if you just search for the symbol * on their store it will list everything and you can also see that there is a second bundle for $337 and an artisan keycap collab in the CAPS/KATE profile for $42

Also they have the password thing on products they are still working on all the time I think it is just a shopify thing. They also use password products to release things early to people who sign up for the mailing list.

2

wolfenstein734 OP t1_iu3gzlt wrote

Ahh I didn’t know that. I wonder if they will make a product announcement about it

1

RelativeChance t1_iu3hzs7 wrote

The product links all seem to work now. It will be limited to 500 units and include keycaps https://ramaworks.store/pages/kaijukingz/#kaiju-collection

I'm honestly quite shocked they have the guts to release another caps color way when they have not fulfilled any previous caps gb and I think it has been a year since they started those

5

Sejhaj t1_iu3vc09 wrote

As well as another Kara gb. To be fair this collab was probably produced alongside the seq 2 gb but I still think it is a shitty signal to send to the people who support your business.

1

wolfenstein734 OP t1_iu4caq2 wrote

Maybe this is why the Kara fulfillment is taking so long. Also it’s gonna take at least another year for him to get the key cap molds correct. I wonder why people still buy stuff from this guy.

1

Sejhaj t1_iu4g7q4 wrote

Supposedly case production is completed and it is the new meme-cut pcbs that is taking time being produced. If I were to guess why fulfillment is taking so long, I would say RAMA is too busy doing anything else than actually putting the required time and effort into planning GB timelines and production, sadly.

But yeah, as someone who joined the Kare seq 2 groupbuy I regulairly feel worse with my purchase. Partially because the lower end keyboard market is way different than it was summer '21 and partilly because RAMA seems to have zero cares to give towards the community as long as he is making money off of them.

1

wolfenstein734 OP t1_iu4ka9v wrote

Yeah I got into that group buy too and I regret it... I thought it would be a short one like the seq1 was. Even if he had to design a new PCB, it still shouldn't take this long to get everything tested and made.

1

RelativeChance t1_iu4mebp wrote

It's because Kate left Rama, I think they lost their manufacturing contact and they definitely also lost Wilba. She has been fulfilling artisan keycap gbs in like 3 months in comparison. The situation with CAPS is quite unbelievable actually. Rama sold like 10 colorways and is still releasing more colorways without ever even finalizing the mold. Other keycap manufacturers like gmk epbt etc have a working mold they only have a long wait time because there is a long queue of orders. Rama basically took advantage of consumers being used to long wait times to sell a half finished project early. It's a genius business move, where other business would need to take out a loan, he can get all the money from all the sales upfront before making anything, but it leaves the customer with no real guarantee of quality and no eta.

1

wolfenstein734 OP t1_iu4r1xf wrote

Yeah the keycap situation is insane. I thought that they had a working mold before they went and did a keycap groupbuy but I guess I was wrong there too. Seems like things are really going off the rails at Rama works.
