I am new to this, and it may not be the best subreddit. Anyone know of therapists in the greater Portland area where a young male adult can get in? I am just looking to talk with someone get some things off my chest. It’s been long enough

I second the psychology today lookup! It’s a great way to find a provider that fits what you need. In my experience, things like gender and practice focus can make a huge difference. I hope you find a great therapist who can give you the space you need to get through some stuff! Cheers for seeking help. I’m proud of you! That’s an amazing step!

Likewise! Keep in mind though that therapists are a bit hard to come by in Maine at the moment, so there may be a wait time before your initial consultation.
Almost like there's a lot of reason to go to therapy nowadays (and not enough therapists). But keep on keeping on, I know you can do it!

Talk to your PCP and they should be able to give you some recommendations. Remember that not every therapist is right for you, and not every type of therapy is right for you. Don’t let anyone discourage you and never listen to any advice the even remotely sounds like “tough it out”…

I asked my PCP and they told me I had to go through my insurance to see what they'd cover and handle it myself because they don't make referrals to therapists. Except calling people makes me anxious so I avoid it, which is one of many reasons I need therapy. It's a vicious cycle.

The first initial call will be a voice mail almost every time. And when they call you back for the phone consult it’s like 15 mins and you don’t need to (if you don’t want to) go into a ton of detail.

I also recommend the Psychology Today search! If you do go that route, something I found helpful when emailing therapists about openings was to provide a brief description of what I was looking for help with and asking if they knew of any colleagues I could reach out to for openings if they didn’t have any. It gave me a little confidence with reaching out because reading their bios and making a decision on who to even contact first was such a vulnerable place to be. The therapists I reached out to were more than happy to provide other names and that’s how I found my current fit.

I went through Lifestance Health, primarily because they got me an appointment in about 2 weeks, rather than telling me they had no openings like most people I emailed. I don't know how busy they are currently though.
It ended up working out really well and I was happy with the experience overall. I was able to do all my therapy via telehealth sessions which was convenient and really handy when COVID was peaking pretty bad a while back.

I second Lifestance!

Check out mcgeachey hall. I get free therapy by getting it through a resident. It’s awesome and probably worth a shot. As you may know, it is hard to get any provider these days tho.

You will need a referral to McG from your primary care provider, however!

Psychology Specialists of Maine has offices in Portland and Brunswick and their waitlist moves pretty quickly since they have so many therapists.

I also say check out the Psychology Today site, can sort by gender/specialty/insurance/location and a bunch of other things. If you’re willing to do virtual sessions, you can expand your search to the rest of Maine as well.

Spurwink and Sweetser both have affiliate programs with therapists all over the place. I would heavily vet smaller agencies - I recently left a job with a smaller agency as an outpatient therapist because they had ridiculous expectations and provided almost no support, meaning the therapists themselves were not able to properly treat their clients. Psychology Today is a good place to start, just send out a bunch of messages and see who vibes with you! I will tell you that lots and LOTS of therapists are doing telehealth-only these days and it's become really hard to find folks who take in-person clients.
Best of luck to you!

I recommend Maura Higgins, she’s great and also does telehealth as well as in person visits

Check out better help (I think it’s called). It’s a Telehealth company that contracts with people (and therapists). It was covered under my insurance and It was a big help during Covid lockdowns for me. (Of course if you can find something locally then you do you, but this was an alternative that worked for me)
MaryBitchards t1_izai0yu wrote
I tried that during the lockdown...and they gave me an antivax COVID hoaxer. Longest 50 minutes of my life.

I’m sorry, I had a good experience and it’s unfortunate that others didnt

I'd probably leave Betterhelp as a last option tbh. They do sketchy stuff like adding random therapists who aren't even associated with them to their roster (which happened to mine). If you do go for it, at least try to find some kind of discount code from an influencer or something. ;)
To be fair to them though, I like that it has a text chat feature. Good if you have communication issues or shit internet that can't do zoom calls.
Zookeeper_Toot t1_izdy6lr wrote
I’ve also had a great experience with BetterHelp. I got tired of the waitlists for local therapists. My husband signed up too and it’s been a really good thing in our lives. With a referral you get a free session, and there are some discounts available. My cost is $60wk so I think it’s a pretty fair deal and no wait.

You may be well meaning, but this is really terrible advice. Some of the healthiest minds I’ve met all share the skill of “knowing when to ask for help”.

Good intentions, but bad advice. Therapy really can help. It's always good to have a shoulder to lean on for stuff you just can't take on yourself.
