Regarding streaming info, I'd love to have more data available but the API is just giving us the name of the provider and its logo :).

As for movie/tv show info, I have indeed more data available. What do you think is missing and should be added there?

m00nturkey t1_iusr77k wrote

Just curious what’s the motivation of making this? If what you’re trying to make is already available and you’re literallly just pulling its API?

27

Maker_MG82 OP t1_iuswbxu wrote

I was not happy with the justwatch website, I find the UI too crowded, I just wanted a simpler interface that even my kids could use when checking if a movie was available. As I'm a web developer, it was a good excuse to build something and I thought I might as well release it just in case someone else would find it useful too.

phl23 t1_iutn42h wrote

Yeah who needs forks? Seriously why not. As long it's more convenient.

MikeSchurman t1_iutkeqc wrote

I threw in Harry Potter for fun, and your site was much faster and somehow more accurate than justwatch.com/ca. Your site said I could watch it at crave, which I can, but justwatch said it's not streaming anywhere. Weird, but kudos. I don't understand all the flack as your site brings value, to some at least.

itjy t1_ius796v wrote

Or unogs, or one of the myriad of sites already available. Getting a bit tired of the "I made this thing of which dozens already existed" posts.

Well yeah, justwatch without the distraction, that was the goal :)

JustWatch uses IMDb, which is an Amazon company.

rarbg is good too

Perpetually_isolated t1_iusb42b wrote

Holy hell I have thought about rarbg in years.

Yify was good in their day but they kept file size small by giving versions with stripped down audio.

7

moonra_zk t1_iusg5k9 wrote

Mostly a lot of compression, I can't imagine watching YIFY rips on a big screen.

use sodaplayer and you don't have to download the torrent anymore. we've come a long way

https://www.sodaplayer.com/

3

meltingpotato t1_ius9a5m wrote

That requires good internet speed and high data cap

1

j035u5 t1_iusq3zb wrote

Good internet speed sure, but it uses no more data. It doesn't download the video twice. If you have a data cap or low speeds, don't stream high definition video, regardless of where it's from.

1

meltingpotato t1_iussq0z wrote

It would if you want to rewatch something, unless the player actually downloads the file while streaming. does it?

1

recreationx t1_iutqadb wrote

I would like to think that there is a cache mechanism, but that just seems implausible since file sizes will pretty big if you retain everything.

1

j035u5 t1_iutt1wq wrote

Yes, if you have a bandwidth cap then don't stream the same video multiple times. That doesn't mean it takes any more data to stream than to download though, it takes the exact same amount of bandwidth either way.

1

meltingpotato t1_iuv8pbj wrote

>Yes, if you have a bandwidth cap then don't stream the same video multiple times

or, you know, I can just download the high quality file during the time of day that my internet is cheaper and then watch it offline as many times as I want. thanks for the suggestion though.

1

j035u5 t1_iuvh72p wrote

Yup, nothing stopping you. Was just correcting what you said because it was wrong. No one is saying don't download anything, not really sure why you're still talking about it to be honest.

ferocious_coug t1_iuryjsn wrote

Honestly TPB still works great for movies and tv. Just check the files beforehand and don’t be an idiot.

I need to utilise a VPN to access any of the torrent websites because our past government decided to kneel at the altar of the MPAA...

Ah yes, this guy's comment is what is going to get 1337x shut down, the piracy police definitely didn't know about it beforehand.

4

Fellhuhn t1_iusf3vq wrote

And they allow that kind of usage of their API?

3

Maker_MG82 OP t1_iushu79 wrote

Yes. I'm using the TMDB API which get its streaming data from justwatch. This is a stripped down version of what you could get on the justwatch website: basically they just provide the name of the provider and its logo. But this is all I needed for my use case :)

Too bad yours doesnt save the country. You can store that in cookie without require consent

Hey just wanted to let you know that your last selected country is now kept for subsequent visits.

1

BendyBeretta t1_iurflk9 wrote

A reminder: it's free so whatever you search here is farmed and sold to entertainment companies as popular.

Not a problem per se. Just understand.

Don't let this get buried. As a customer you have a right to know.

7

ubccompscistudent t1_ius1s0t wrote

What a strange comment. Of course companies will utilize their own metrics to make a profit. Every company in history does this.

What's currently a topic of contention is when companies build an identity out of you and associate data with you. When they can sell personally identifiable information (PII) -- that's the ethical dilemma of our time.

This is like saying "If you buy nike shoes at footlocker, both nike and footlocker will use this information to mark those shoes as popular!". Like, yeah?

2

Even if you have Amazon Prime, that’s no guarantee it’s included in the subscription. It’s very misleading. They list movies that are pay-on-demand alongside the ones that are subscription-only.

4

qwertycantread t1_iuuxzq4 wrote

That’s not true. There are separate listings for Amazon and Amazon Prime. Prime is always free.

If I need to live a specific place to watch specific content, I'll just torrent it.

Media companies need to realize that they need to beat (or at least be somewhat close, which they are a far way from) the convenience of piracy if they want to make a buck.
