Wtf is wrong with you. Dude fell like 20ft, no matter how professional you are at things you will still make mistakes, he broke his leg from a fall not from being old, he had a mistake because he is human not because he is washed up. I bet you don't even come close to his skill level for anything you do in your life. Instead of trying to bring him down maybe you should work at bringing yourself up.
night_man4 t1_ir2asg2 wrote
To be more specific he can’t be washed up because he hasn’t competed in a long time. If he were still trying to compete and falling short i would consider him washed up. But i just consider him retired.

He just did a 720 in a documentary like 2 years ago which considering he was pushing 50 something is absolutely amazing.

I hate to ahem break it to you.. (hah) but as you get older things like this happen more and more often.
Tony is 54 years old. The body just can't handle what it did in its 20's.
That being said 20 ft is no joke to fall on, regardless of age. But his age certainly hurt him.
Although I will say the person you were responding to does seem bitter and dramatic and all I'm talking about is how age absolutely is not in his favor.
ASK ME HOW I KNOW
edit: Wow, apparently people think mid 50's is just as healthy as in your 20's. Oh boy.
edit 2: Oh wow, y'all really do think 50 is the new 20 sincerely and deeply. O_O

You're shoehorning this reality check into the conversation. Nobody here has demonstrated the inability to realize 54 year olds are less physically capable than 20 year olds.
You're grumbling into the void and the only realistic human explanation is that you crave a sense that people know you're not a fool.

gettinggnarly t1_ir07cj7 wrote
Not that I don’t agree with you, but it was his femur that was broken. Which is usually a more intense healing process. I’m sure being old absolutely doesn’t make it heal any faster though.
akcoder t1_ir0vqke wrote
I’m currently dealing with a broken femur. The most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. Femurs take a long time to heal. My doc told me 4-6 months minimum before I’ll be back to life again.
Then after the healing you need to do physical therapy to regain your strength. Since my break 7 weeks ago I’ve lost so much strength it takes every bit of strength I have just to lift the leg up to get into bed/car/etc, and some days I don’t even have that and have to use my hands to lift/move/reposition my leg.
Femur breaks are no joke.
tarmacc t1_ir1r3dm wrote
They are fucking loud when they break too. One of the worst sounds I've ever heard. Wasn't even my femur.
terracottatoast t1_ir2pow0 wrote
Yeah I broke my femur in 2 when I was 7 and between the month long hospital stay, then a cast, then a wheel chair, then crutches, then physical therapy... I'd say 7 months even to a year for a full recovery is normal.
SadLlamasOnMars t1_ir2zlwc wrote
I snapped mine in January. I was amazed when I hit this point where everything just got easier and recovery accelerated.
Strange_Tart7721 t1_ir3ci5f wrote
Hang in there and there are a lot more factors than just muscle mass to not being able to move your leg right now. As someone who exploded their tibia and spent over 6 months non-weight bearing it's a long shitty road but once the healing starts you will at least be able to move it again.

I’m getting a total hip replacement this Friday. Things will get better soon! My femoral break was at the neck. Screws backed out, hence the new hip.
Strange_Tart7721 t1_ir3qqq8 wrote
25 screws and 2 plates here. Thankfully nothing has ever backed out, but I did lose most of the sensation in my shin. I'm back to everything but long distance running.

newtekie1 t1_ir1b0on wrote
Also, this wasn't just like a minor fracture of the femur either. His femur was totally split in 2. The xray looked really bad.
SadLlamasOnMars t1_ir2z9qi wrote
It's more the muscle damage. I snapped mine in January and the titanium rod makes it stronger then ever. But the muscle damage from bone driving into muscle is gnarly. Plus the surgeon needs to fuck with a bunch of muscle in the hip and knee to insert the metal rod. It's fucked up but I'm not even close to Tony Hawks age and he is ahead of me.
Pls_submit_a_ticket t1_ir0irdg wrote
Im not a dogtor, but I don’t think there is any increased risk of another break. There is even a time during repair where your bone is stronger than it ever was before due to calcium collection at the site of the break. Although, that is a temporary phenomenon.

No joke I’m 34 and I got back into skateboarding recently after a 15 year break. I’ve been going through a rough time, I had a messy divorce earlier this year, my grandmother died, moved to a new town, shitty job. Skateboarding has been my emotional outlet where I don’t stress about anything when I’m doing it.
I was having a hard time with my now ex-girlfriend the other night and I skated through downtown to have a beer by the train tracks to calm down. On my way back two different drunk college kids asked me mockingly “cAn yOu Do a KiCKfliP?!?!”
I had to pause for a second because I very nearly snapped and assaulted these stupid little fucks. Luckily I just went on my way but it scares me how close I came to doing something stupid.

Two days ago i bought a longboard. The last time i set foot on a skateboard is atleast 20 years ago. Last night i took the board for a spin and i flew into the bushes.. my pants ruined.. my body is sore AF and i got atleast ten splinters in my hands which i cant remove myself so i had to go to the doctor lol. although it hurts i feel awesome.

Please wear safety gear my friend. Helmet, gloves, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads are what saved me from more extensive injuries when I launched off my OneWheel 7 weeks ago and broke my femur.
