Oh... am I the only one who thought they were melting down storage containers for some reason? Like, to turn into vaccines.

What the fuck is wrong with my Brain?

Nope. Missed factory AND read “what the fuck is wrong with my Brian?”

Nah it’s intentional click bait phrasing, would have been so simple to say “made in shipping containers”. Part of the problem with the media, it’s more interesting in ratings than communicating information. They want confusion, they want arguing even about trivial subjects because that = engagement.

New mRNA vaccine factory is made from shipping containers — Each “BioNTainer” can produce 50 million COVID-19 vaccine doses per year. Kristin Houser for Freethink, January 22nd, 2023

New containers. This isn’t upcycling, just shipping containers are hot news apparently.

Amazing. I always picture how modular factories like this could be the keystone of a truly sustainable chemical/ biotechnological industry. Of course it's tricky to downscale the process engineering, without losing too much quality and scaling effects, but I am sure it's worth it. Imagine every city being able to produce multiple essential pharmacies, ground chemicals, etc. without being dependent on some mega factories on the other side of the planet.

That sounds more resilient, but what about it is more sustainable?

I remember reading about them 2 years ago. Glad they are getting approval.

This could be a big step to hospital made custom dugs

mRNA medicines developed for specific patients, then produced and administered on site. Patient cancer cells analyzed, a custom mRNA sequence generated, sent to the on site drug factory.

This is a vaccine factory for a huge class of treatments, that could fit in the space of a dozen car parks, quite possibly the biggest breakthrough in hospital equipment since the X-Ray machine.
