Aha! I was wondering about the colors.

Beautiful photo!

No I haven't

Using film that shows the IR part of the spectrum, you can see healthy vs unhealthy parts of a forest for example.

QueenCassie5 t1_izl7q4v wrote

How did you get this processed? The film lab told me no more IR film because the processing is toxic.

7

dougolupski OP t1_izl9z6x wrote

I did it myself at home using the standard E6 kits from the Film Photography Project. The current aerochrome from Dean that you see in black tubes on eBay is safe for C41 (color negative) or E6 (reversal). There were older versions of Aerochrome that I believed used C22 chemicals and those are not available any more.

Volkornbroten t1_izlrn4i wrote

I thought the development chemicals for all color film were toxic? Maybe IR is more so, in some way?

This is the limit of my knowledge on the subject. They said it was no longer a thing they did, it is super bad, ok, bummer. What is the new solution? Freaky expensive camera. :-(

How do you even begin to pronounce this name

5

dougolupski OP t1_izkcu1f wrote

I have no idea, we did pretty ok with Icelandic names when we were there but this one still stumps the tongue.

7

Western-Image7125 t1_izkfyyq wrote

Lol I remember the only way this worked was we were already near the location and we would ask the local where was blah blah and they were like “oh you mean unpronouncible word it’s right over there take a left”

I was gonna ask which is more impressive, the canyon or the pronunciation? I'm sure both are beautiful in their own right.

honest question, how the fuck do you pronounce something like that? a whole bunch of silent letters?

gneiss_kitty t1_izmpemc wrote

it's roughly "fya thrar glyu fur" which is probably still not totally correct, but that's what I can remember from my trip with a local trying to teach me (and getting a good laugh out of it from my effort)

I find the red / pink / salmon 🍣 hued snow captivating and am surprised no one has discussed that!

I’d assume the red is some sort of algae or photosynthetic bacteria? 🦠🩸

Is this normally observed in this area?

Edit: just infrared, darn I need to skim better. Wish it was red algae! 😂

dougolupski OP t1_izkvgvb wrote

Interesting take, I mentioned in other comments this was shot on Kodak Aerochrome false color infrared surveillance film. It was used for reconnaissance in the military it turns greens into reds to help detect enemy positions

dDDD_dD_DdDD t1_izkwflk wrote

So if it’s infrared film all that indicates a lot of melty bits right?

Do you know if this is standard, or would this be showing the increased extent of melt due to climate change impact? 🤔🫠🌎

dougolupski OP t1_izky2j0 wrote

All the red is green grass, the grass reflects IR. What I may be assuming you see as melty bits are various rock formation that look rounded over from erosion. There is no snow present when I took this photo just late Autumn grasses and moss.

I see!

Thanks for explaining, guess it was my own cultural biases & preconceptions based on incomplete knowledge that led me to assume all that lush vegetation 🌾 was snow ❄️. Sorry! 😬

That’s cool but why

dougolupski OP t1_izke30f wrote

A larger article on it. It is a false color infrared surveillance film developed by the military to find camouflaged positions. Netting does reflect IR light like natural foliage does. The department of agriculture also used it to monitor its forrest.

deefstes t1_izknjvd wrote

I'm sure that must have been a game changer for the military when they were able to take a picture, have the film shipped through the supply chain to HQ to be developed, have the developed picture shipped back to the front line, so they can see the sniper hiding next to that bush and shoot him before they can shoot you. ;-)
