My wife and I moved to Hartford county from Houston earlier this year. We’re both from NE but basically have no local friends after being in the south for 7 years. We’re early to late 30s with one kid and we barely socialize. I am trying to ramp that up but have no idea where to start. Where do mid 30s professionals gather on weekends? This is a very blank slate question but anything would help!

Instead of going to a random place like a bar or similar and hoping to meet future friends, you’re better off going to a targeted event where you will meet people with similar interests. A parents group thing, a house of worship event, game/theme night at a venue, etc. Whatever interests/hobbies you like.

Probably the best place to start though is your neighborhood. Invite people over for drinks, game night, pit fires, or whatever wit who you think you would connect with.

Can also try to develop friendships with co workers as well but that can often take longer.

You don't socialize ever if you're over 30 in modern society. Social media has destroyed this. There's a reason suicide rates are through the roof.

Slightly older mom of 2 in Hartford county. I made some friends through a parent leadership program my town does (https://pep.extension.uconn.edu/#). I also made some friendships once I started volunteering with a group.

It’s really hard, but getting involved in stuff locally has helped me connect to others. I’m pretty shy, so having something to DO while I interact helps. You & your partner may need to trade off childcare, but some groups do offer it. You could also help create childcare at a group your passionate about.

Join the Forte! Group at the Hartford symphony orchestra (under 45 group). They do pre concert happy hours at local bars included with ticket purchases etc. Great way to meet people in Hartford, have fun and see a show. There’s also HYPE (Hartford young professionals) that does happy hours, trivias, games etc

Find events that interest you at https://www.meetup.com, https://www.eventbrite.com, etc.

Maybe you’ll meet people with similar interests. If not, you’ll still have a good time.

I’ve had good luck doing activities. Motorcycle club or racing sailboats. Even if you’re not super sports oriented you might join a softball league or a soccer league. 20 somethings in New Haven play kickball and that’s been a huge social outlet for some of my employees.

Depending on the age of your kid, how about a gym that has a daycare? Three birds with one stone; get or stay healthy/fit, your kid may make some new friends and so might you and your wife.

You mentioned the word that ruins socializing, child! (source, 2 of my own). Kidding aside, how about socializing with you neighbors that have kids of similar age?

CT valley Brewery and Bird House coffee!!! Or wait for you kid to get old enough to get into some sport programs and you will socialize with the other parents forced into poverty for their children’s athletic physical development (partly sarcastic here, partly)

What makes you think Houston is The South? How many pick-up trucks a day pass by blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd? Telling us you are coming back from The South and that you lived in Texas will be too confusing a first impression to build friendship upon.
