Was going to make this comment as well. I am surprised how many people who grew up around here pronounce it differently!

We should build a phylogenetic tree of all the different pronunciations.

If you knock on Liz Warren's door she would probably tell you (it's "lin-AY-un")

I lived at 3 Linnaean st for 5 + years. Always pronounced it Lin-Ay-un. I’m from western Massachusetts but have multiple friends who were born and raised in Cambridge, with their parents and grandparents also living/being raised in Cambridge. They are certain it’s pronounced “Lin-ee-un”. Given this is their town I have to say they are right and I’m pronouncing it wrong. But I’m stuck in my ways so will always call it “Lin-ay-un”.

Good times there. Shout out half shell and abbey !!

Same way you would pronounce Carl Linnaeus's surname...

dyqik t1_jdh7o2j wrote

Ah, so it's von Linné St.

[fɔn lɪˈneː]

Linnaeus is the Latin form of his Swedish surname, used because he wrote his scientific work in Latin. He was born Carl Linné, and later ennobled to add the von.
