i bought a second hand barbour (bedale) about 10 years ago and i've had to have it patched and re-waxed at the barbour warehouse twice. no idea how old it was when i bought it. They're decent coats, very functional and suit a lot of different looks but they do require some maintenance.

They’re excellent jackets. Personally I prefer the ones that are less waxed but the style you’ve picked is a classic for a reason. I’ve had mine for 12 years now - my parents both have theirs from the 70s and they are still going strong. Get one big enough you can layer up underneath it. Barbour will also do repairs for you for very reasonable prices.

Don’t buy one if you’re in a warmer climate though (godfather couldn’t bear to leave his and took it to Florida with him where it started to smell so badly he had to relegate it to the garage.)

Definitely well made, you’ll save a lot buying used. I got one from the late 90s on eBay for about $120. It smelled like mildew, so I soaked it in a vinegar bath overnight, then two fresh water baths to get the vinegar out, and it’s been great. After it dried, I re waxed it using a hair dryer and their wax, which you can buy in tins. All together, I spent about $140 and maybe 3 total hours getting it ready, and I’ve worn it the last 3 years without issue

My two cents is they are not all they’re chalked up to be. They certainly provide a rugged and outdoorsy British look, but they don’t stand up to average wear.

Bought mine about three years ago at an Orvis. It developed a significant tear within six months and the cuffs fray quickly. I do not wear it daily, I give the jacket breaks and I don’t wear it for anything more than a dog walk.

When I shipped it out for a rewax and repair of the pocket, they told me that I should really reinforce all of the edges with more cloth, a service that Barbour provides for a hefty fee. In my mind, the jackets should just come reinforced. Even when newly waxed, it does not perform terribly well in rain.

Being unable to wash it, it develops a faint smell of a musty tarp which has been left outside in the fall.

i love mine. It's nicer looking than my Filson, so it's kind of my dress jacket but i have done some outdoors work in it and it seems to be holding up very well.

They last forever if all you’re doing is normal everyday stuff and not doing field work in them daily. I like mine but if I could choose again I’d get the Tom beckbe waced jacket. Looks like it has more functional pockets and isn’t as popular as barbours. My biggest complaint is you can spot a Barbour anytime someone wears them and ALOT of people wear them.

Mine is good as a fall jacket not a winter coat though.

Check out cox the saddler. Their prices are way better than buying from a US store.

Get a John Partridge one, still made in the UK with waxed cotton from Dundee.

Have 2, one 7 years old and one 20 some years old. Keep them waxed and they’ll last forever.

I have the men’s equivalent and it has lasted very well. I send it for repair/rewax to the Barbour factory (Jarrow, UK) and comes back as good as new.

Very water resistant and good warmth for a relatively thin jacket.

I have one and wear it for cycle + train commuting. Waterproof, looks fine and somewhat classy. I like it but you get sweaty easily. Bought it new in EU land on sale, about 250Euro for a Bedale

We have no idea as we don't know your finances to do a cost/benefit analysis. Worth is a financial metric and not one you can ask about online and get an answer worth a damn. Case in point, many ask about office chairs and cost of entry on a BIFL office chair is $1000. Are they worth the price?
